Character Name: Arthur Pendragon
Series: BBC's Merlin
Age: 23
From When?: From the end of series 2.
Inmate/Warden: Warden. Arthur is a prat, a royal one, but he doesn't have an evil bone in his body. He's willing to do whatever it takes to save Camelot and I'm sure he'll do the same with his Inmate. Plus, he'll get to be princely and order someone besides Merlin around. I'm sure the Admiral will have taken notice of Arthur's good qualities and his vast potential and asked him to join the crew on the Barge.
Item: A map.
Abilities/Powers: Arthur is completely human. He is a trained knight, however, and is skilled in medieval combat, riding, fighting while on horseback, jousting, and hunting. He also knows his way around medieval weaponry, such as: the sword, the lance, mace, crossbow, and ax. He is Camelot's champion, the strongest and best of the knights, and has only been beaten twice. Only two people have been known to defeat him, Lancelot and Morgause.
Personality: Arthur suffers from only child syndrome and the fact that he's a prince only adds to that. At first glance he appears to be selfish, spoiled, arrogant, and a complete bully. The very first time we see Arthur he uses a servant as a target during training and he seems to have no real care for that servant's welfare. Merlin even goes so far as to call him an ass. Arthur expects to be treated like the prince he is and doesn't take kindly to anyone who insults him. He resents at first that Merlin has become his personal manservant and doesn't behave toward him any differently that he did when they first met, which was with a degree of annoyance and superiority, but he does come to appreciate that Merlin is the only one he knows who is completely honest with him. He eventually begins to trust Merlin and considers him a friend, or as much as he could given their stations, and has on many occasions saved his life.
Arthur is definitely the brave sort and takes his role as the leader of Camelot's knight very seriously. He's a hard-ass and doesn't like being treated like a prince on the training field. He wants to be respected by his men as a good leader, not as the next in line for the thrown. Despite that little agitation he will do anything it takes to make sure Camelot is safe and even defies his father on many occasions to do just that. Sometimes it lands him in the dungeon, but he considers it worth the risk. He also doesn't particularly agree with his father's methods in the war against magic and all things of that ilk. Where Uther seems to be hell-bent on seeing anyone who has the slightest association with magic put to death, Arthur is more calm and looks at the situation more objectively. He also doesn't really consider all magic wielders to be evil, unlike Uther. Obviously because of their difference of opinions, Arthur relationship with his father is rather strained, but Arthur does seek Uther's approval above all else and wishes to be seen as a competent knight and future king.
Arthur also isn't one to wear his heart on his sleeve and be open about his emotions. However, the one time he openly displayed his emotions to his father, was his feelings of intense betrayal and anger over the truth of his mother's death. Now he was eventually made to believe the truth about his mother was all a sorceress's lie to trick him, but he was willing to kill Uther over that discovery. It just goes to show how vulnerable Arthur can be despite the front he puts on.
He's generally pretty bossy to Merlin, but they banter with one another a lot which adds to their camaraderie. He can be a bit thick about Merlin and his magic though and somehow hasn't become aware of it yet. Could be Merlin's just that good at hiding it, or just that Arthur isn't always the most observant person. When it comes to love, it's never been an easy road for Arthur. He's been magically duped a few times and it's a wonder he's allowed himself to feel real love for anyone. But, he's come to love Guinevere, despite the fact that she's a servant and would never get the chance to be with her openly until he becomes king. He remains optimistic, however, in the hopes that one day they will be together.
How will he react to the Barge? Well, the high tech stuff might freak him out a bit until he get's used to it. Being raised to believe anything remotely abnormal could be magic and therefore bad, doesn't really help matters. But Arthur is fair, if anything, and will generally give it the benefit of the doubt. Other than that, I think he'll adapt nicely and will most likely treat his Inmate like he would a knight he was training. And also a bit like a manservant. So Merlin might just have a reprieve from his duties to Arthur in that regard.
