Ofsted Inspection

Well today was the first day of my school's Ofsted inspection. Indeed I didn't escape the wrath of the inspectors, my Literacy lesson with Year 6 was observed for a good half an hour. I was really nervous and wasn't sure what to make of my lesson. The inspector seemed to be smiling and didn't seem concerned, but I felt like my lesson could have gone a bit better. Another teacher had planned the lesson about advertisements, it's always a bit harder to teach a lesson someone else has planned. I felt like I spent too much time on the PowerPoint presentation when I should have sped up a bit and set the children off on their work earlier.

The inspector came to find me at the end of the day to give me feedback. He gave me "satisfactory with many good points" so I can't complain about that. He was very positive and gave me some very encouraging comments. Some of his positive comments were that I was very well prepared for the lesson and used good resources; that I knew exactly what I wanted the children to learn, that I ensured the children were given everything they needed to learn this, and that I would constantly check for understanding; that I maintained excellent control of the class, even with the more difficult characters; I used 'speaking partners' to good effect and ensured all children were involved in class discussion.
He said the only thing preventing me from getting a "good" was that my teacher input took too long so some of the children began switching off, which I realised myself so it didn't come as a shock. He suggested for lessons with long teacher inputs to break it up with smaller activities, which shouldn't be too difficult for me to improve upon.

Overall I'm very happy with my "satisfactory" because it means I'm at the standard that is expected of me, and other teachers who have been teaching for years also got satisfactory. Not bad for my first ever Ofsted inspection in a school I've only been in for a month. I just need to survive tomorrow now...
