Fonejacker

The house phone rang at 3:45 this morning. My mum answered the phone.

"Hello. This is British Gas, we are calling about your consumption."

My mum screamed at the man down the phone for phoning so early in the morning and slammed the phone down on him.

On dialing 1471 (caller I.D. service) we were given the following number: 07973773719. This is quite obviously a mobile telephone number, not a phone that someone from British Gas would call from. We have tried ringing the number all day, but it just rings through and we come to the "Orange Answerphone". From phoning British Gas today they confirmed that no one in their company would call using a mobile telephone number, and they tried the number themselves but again there was no answer. We have been told that it could have been people wanting to burgle our house, and they were phoning to check if anybody was home. If this is true, it is quite worrying. They must have chosen our house and purposefully found out our telephone number. They will be likely to try again, and what if no one is home next time?

My mum said the man spoke with an Asian accent, but I think that could have been put-on by the caller.

Maybe it was Fonejacker? I hope not, I can't stand that show!

It was probably just a random prank call to a random number but I asked my mum not to answer the phone if it rings again tonight, let the burglars think we're not home and get the surprise of their life when I'm there to greet them when they come into our house...
but my mum said she would have to answer the phone in case it is the hospital phoning about my nan, which I think is more important that me getting the opportunity to twat a couple of burglars.

other stuff, family, nan, mum
