Have to go to an art opening later; a friend of mine is the gallery director at a community college, and the summer exhibit is one of people's collection of various stuff. I loaned her my collection of coffeepots (one coffeepot is just a coffeepot, but fifty coffeepots are a short history of industrial design) and husband loaned his outer space stuff and bottle/can openers.
Do people choose their collections, or do their collections choose them?
I didn't set out to collect coffeepots, or antique Chinese Checkers boards, or chalkware fruit wall plaques, but, once I had a few of each, they'd end up near each other, and it seemed like a good idea to add more. Like Topsy, the collections "just growed."
