I didn't know what to write about today, so I chose one of the Writer's Block questions for today.
What personality trait has gotten me in the most trouble?
Green-Eyed Monster!
I am normally a quiet person. Most people at a glance would say that I am nice, shy, quiet and sometimes even withdrawn. I like to do things for others and I like to see others benefit from my talents more than I benefit from them. I enjoy seeing the joy and gladness on someone elses face when I've done something that made them happy.
Have you ever seen a huge, green-eyed monster with 13 tentacles on his head coming at you with huge, white, pointy teeth that look like they were just sharpened for battle? A matted, hairy mane extends halfway down the monster's back and it displays dagger-like claws that can tear through steel in a heartbeat. Seen anything like it? Well, that is what my temper looks like. When I tell people I have a temper that is really hard to control, they honestly don't believe me. I tend to make rash decisions based on the state of my temper at the moment of the incident. I, this nice calm, shy and quiet girl, lets my temper overtake my very being and, therefore, get the best of me.
I have since learned the number one rule in how to control a temper that gets the best of me. I simply take time to remove myself from the situation. I find it works much better in the long run if you step back and get away from the situation for a moment....even if its just long enough to count to 10. This calms me down so that that Green-eyed Monster doesnt' look so huge or so close to me! This gives me at least 10 seconds to prepare to face things with a clear head again. Things can be solved much easier without the Green-Eyed Monster's blazing stare upon you.
So, if you have a Green-Eyed Monster, be sure to step back once in a while and count to 10. I know it may should childish because that is what we tell our children when we teach them how to deal with tempers when socializing with friends and school mates. But, in all acutality, the advice you give your kids, is advice that is good for you as well. Counting to 10 really does work, just like mom said it would.
