I am having difficult time forming conclusions about Russian-Georgian conflict in the cacus region.  Despite my questionable 'Russianess' (living on the continent for more than half of my life), being an American citizen and coming from a no longer existing country, this conflict still manages to hit close to home... as did Kosovo.  I am reading ( Read more... )

For quite some time now, the United States has been busily setting up client regimes in the old Soviet Union’s former sphere of influence. But what was Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili thinking?’ Sure, the US spent a lot of money to help along his “Rose Revolution,” which included his election. And, sure, he welcomed George W. Bush as a conquering hero in Tbilisi a few years ago in celebration of thereof.

Did he really think he was going to catch Russia off-guard? Failing that, did he really think US troops would come to his rescue? Proximity to a neighboring country’s oil pipeline is not the same as sitting on top of what might be the world’s biggest oil reserves (like Iraq). What can Bush do, besides talk?
