Notes: …/S-SIGHS. Done for my sisters, who half-inspired and half-requested this. The odd result of late-night Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 talk. There’s a longer, actual FIC coming that takes place before this, but they wanted some sustenance and some inspiration of their own, I guess, so here. Has a teaser.
“Hey. Valentine.” Peter made his way down from his place near the ceiling, stopping at about eye level to nimbly flip over and seat himself on the wall. Jill watched him expectantly - maybe a little too expectantly, given the slight sharpness in his tone. “I get that dear old Albert did a number on you, but your name’s still in a lot of places and I don’t know all the details,” he said bluntly, leaning forward over his knees to point straight at her face. “Let’s get one thing straight: I still don’t trust you.”
“Hey!" Chris stepped forward. “If anyone here deserves to be judged, I’d say it’s the guy in tights who-”
“Chris.” Jill glanced over her shoulder at him, but her soft address had been enough to cut him off. Despite looking like he still wanted to object, Chris respected her unspoken order and grudgingly withheld it. She turned back to Peter. “That’s understandable,” she replied coolly, “but I’m not asking you to trust me completely.” Turning aside, she gathered a dark cloak from the table and held it shoulder high as if inspecting it. As its folds tumbled free down to the floor, she explained, “I’ll be the only one going in. You two will wait outside until I disable the security. Even if you don’t trust me-” She pulled the cloak over her head, sparing him a glance as she checked the hem around her ankles and the ends of the sleeves. “-you do trust S.H.I.E.L.D. somewhat, and you should trust Chris after what he did. If anyone goes down in this operation, I’ll be the first one. That’ll be enough warning for you to get out.”
Chris visibly frowned during the latter half of Jill’s words, but she was already drawing the hood up over her eyes and fixing her mask in place without anymore hesitation. Once that was done, she looked to Peter again as if for any further objections, but he only nodded slightly after a moment of regarding the glimpse of red that passed for her gaze.
“…Fine. Count me in, but don’t expect me to get cozy.”
Nodding once in return, she turned and went on ahead; Peter took the brief opportunity to look at Chris. “So be honest-you really trust her?”
The uncertain look lingering after Jill immediately hardened as Chris nodded firmly. “With my life.” And then he was at the door right behind her, leaving Peter to momentarily sigh as he dropped his head.
“Good work, Webhead. You just have a knack for hooking up with the odd couples, don’t you?” Leaping up to the ceiling, he hurried after them in turn, and then frowned to himself as he reflected over all he’d been told in the last couple hours. Still, it’s not like I have any idea what Madame Web was talking about, as usual. That old crone’s definitely vague enough in her hints - “Watch for bad blood?” Eesh, she could give Albert a run for his money in the “verbose dialogue” category- He suddenly slowed. Wait a minute-Albert! What was it Jill said?
As clear as a video on repeat, he could remember her stiff expression and tired voice as she explained: He was the captain of our unit in 1998. He betrayed the team and ended up destroying most of it; I’m sure you can imagine the three of us go back pretty far.
The revelation almost making his head spin, Peter picked up the pace. Of course! Bad blood - as in holding a grudge! This must be what Web meant - so I’m supposed to help them defeat him? Or make sure he doesn’t end up defeating them?
“Either way, I’ve definitely got my work cut out for me,” he murmured under his breath as he slipped over the doorway and into the night air. With Chris and Jill already in the car, Peter let fly a web strand onto the nearest building and hoisted himself up into a swing, landing on the roof corner a moment later and waiting for them to lead the way. “He might not be the biggest freak in the super villain circus, but if S.H.I.E.L.D.’s in on this…” Once they were in the street, he shot another line as he stood, pausing just long enough to add to no one in particular, “Well, let’s just hope that luck of yours holds up, you two.” And then he leapt into the night, pursuing their lead at an easy pace.
