Summary: My 910-word guess for what could happen in chapter 334. Kakashi's POV.
“Honestly, I’m surprised you didn’t die on impact,” he mused, talking over the sound of pained and labored breathing. “But in the end, all your resilience did was hurt you.”
The figure currently caught around Kakashi’s right arm shuddered. “Sharingan…Kakashi,” he finished. The large eye he had only just cast over his shoulder was squinted with the effort that speaking was costing him.
“Correct…” Kakashi didn’t bother trying to still his movements as his free hand went for a kunai at his back. More hot blood surged from the pulsing wound as his forearm shifted position inside it, earning another dying grunt. “…But too late.”
“Dammit, Kakuzu,” the other one was yelling, “get out of there!” His calls were useless, of course; the angle at which Raikiri had stricken the body was an almost guaranteed method of paralysis with a success rate of nearly ninety-five percent.
Kakuzu could only watch as the knife’s point drew up alongside his throat. Past him, Shikamaru and Chouji observed without a word, the former wearing an expression that would have mirrored Kakashi’s own had it been visible. The kunai drew back.
The three Leaf shinobi and both Akatsuki members looked over as an explosion suddenly erupted at the base of a nearby tree. Following the echo of splitting wood, a cloud of dirt and debris rose and the thick trunk suddenly began to topple from the middle up. In the corner of Kakashi’s eye, Shikamaru started.
“Ino-!”
He had barely spoken when she came rushing from the cloud in a leap, landing in a crouch at Chouji’s side and appearing startled. Before they could ask, Kakashi withdrew his hand from Kakuzu’s chest with a wet shlugk sound and jumped back-less than a second later, a handful of shuriken whizzed by where his head had been.
Standing, he narrowed his eyes at the sight of another cloaked figure seeming to materialize in front of Kakuzu. The stance it assumed wasn’t a protective one, but rather as though the person had just happened to stumble onto the scene.
“Kakashi-san.”
Uchiha Itachi was perfectly calm and poised. His crimson gaze gave no indication of emotion or intent; the three commas housed in each eye implied otherwise. Although Kakashi’s gaze didn’t leave the Uchiha, he caught a glimpse of yet another figure emerging from the direction of the destroyed tree.
“Well, well,” came a familiar deep voice, “four on two’s a little unfair, don’t you think, Itachi-san?” Kakashi’s peripheral vision showed a huge sword being swung up onto its bearer’s shoulder as it approached. “I knew it was a mistake to send this one.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Hidan snapped, ruffled but obviously relieved. “What the hell’s with you people? Do you have a knack for showing up at the last minute?”
“At least we showed up,” Kisame responded, unaffected by the commentary. “Although I doubt you could come back any more torn up than last time.”
Not good. Kakashi stole a glance at Shikamaru. The Shadow Possession Jutsu was still intact, but he looked as anxious as Kakashi felt. Even if we do have a plan for these circumstances, these two appearing means there’s a good chance they’ve finally decided to move in on Naruto.
“Hidan-san.” Itachi’s flat voice cut off his teammate’s back-talking in an instant. “Once we break that shadow jutsu, take Kakuzu-san and retreat.”
“What? Since when-”
Itachi sent a momentary glare over his shoulder to silence the protest. Other than scoffing and appearing disgruntled, Hidan didn’t object further.
As much as Kakashi disliked the idea of the two escaping, it was probably the best. Tsunade’s reinforcements could only complicate matters if they included Naruto, and in that scenario, the less enemies to worry about, the better. But this was all speculation; Shikamaru would have the final call. If he didn’t act soon, Kakashi would be forced to fulfill his word to Tsunade and take over, something he was already considering. Their enemies had wasted enough time, which meant conversation between him and the others would be minimal to none before the fighting broke out.
Kakashi quickly shifted his focus from Itachi, dangerous as it was, to meet Shikamaru’s eyes. What now? One glimpse revealed that he wasn’t about to let the two criminals get away if he could help it-there was a look about Shikamaru that Kakashi recognized, one that contained no suggestion of surrendering. Ino and Chouji would undoubtedly follow Shikamaru if he chose to remain and fight, and there was nothing to say Kakashi’s orders wouldn’t go unheeded.
If Kakashi hadn’t witnessed the kid’s superior strategizing ability and thinking capacity firsthand, or hadn’t known that Shikamaru had created a back-up plan in the event that something like this occurred, he might have been worried.
Kakuzu remained on the ground behind Itachi. He was breathing, but unmoving, still affected by the forced discharge of Kakashi’s chakra into his torso. Even if he did live, the results of receiving Raikiri so directly wouldn’t go unfelt.
“Shikamaru.” Kakashi’s concentration was once again on the enemy at hand. “I’ll take Itachi.” The rest was unsaid, but he knew Shikamaru got the message: For now, this is still your mission.
In response, Shikamaru changed position to make Hidan arc his scythe over his shoulder. Kisame sounded amused.
“This should certainly be interesting.”
“Damn it,” Hidan retorted, “don’t sound so excited about it!”
Itachi chose that moment to dart forward. Kakashi ran to meet him.
