Summary: Sasuke is perceptive when he wants to be, but that's not always a good thing.
Note: ...Because this is totally where the manga is headed.
"What is it?"
Sakura looks surprised by the question, but doesn't hesitate to slip on that fake smile as though he's mistaken. "Nothing," she dismisses pseudo-cheerfully, an all-too-blatant contrast to the flat detachment of the inquiry, and turns back to the framework she's nailing together. "I was just thinking."
Neither Sasuke's expression nor his conviction changes, but he returns to his own work as well. "...You're bad at lying," he states. Not because he cares, he's convinced himself into thinking, but because it's fact, a simple I'm-better-at-it-than-you,-just-saying. He's turned away from her when he says it, but he knows she pauses at that. The house - rather, the wooden skeleton that will eventually become a house - goes quiet except for their movements, and the lack of further hammering tells him she's about to speak.
"...Sasuke-kun," Sakura begins after a moment, much more somber, "have you ever..." He's listening, even if he doesn't react, and some part of him listens more attentively at that. "...Never mind," she finishes, her tone less believable than before.
As much as beating around the bush pisses him off, Sasuke doesn't confront her with what he figures is obviously wrong. There's no need for it, because they both know: even he's noticed and recognized the sidelong looks, the air of disappointment that swells up around her here and there. But not towards him anymore.
There was a bit of irritation when he first realized it, but out of a pettier jealousy than most would guess. A competitive jealousy. It had nothing to do with sentiment, he was certain, as much as it did a loss of face, of points.
But reasoning doesn't make the change any less irksome.
A few minutes later, Sakura steps up beside him to take some measurements along the nearby wall space. He watches her - her motions, and then her face, which is concentrated and serious, just noting how much older she looks and how much more mature, and barely a second before he means to look away, she catches his stare. She smiles warmly; this time there's nothing fake about it. "What?" she asks, but Sasuke breaks the eye contact and ignores the question. His way of saying, nothing. Sakura doesn't press, but moves back to her space to keep working. Sasuke does the same.
You're bad at lying.
Thankfully, she's bad at recognizing it, too.
