greetings from sunny Edinburgh

Yes, it's sunny in the 'Burgh! t-shirt weather! Better than Liverpool. :)

It's fun here. Last night I went to find dinner at a pub and was enticed into a 'beginners' stand-up gig nearby my hostel. It was really funny. Glad I went! It was in a small room in a pub called the Beehive Inn, it was only 2 pound and there were lots of performers. Very fun. :)

My hostel is good - clean and colourful and close to things. I could see the castle from my breakfast table! How fantastic is that?

Yesterday, the train trip from Liverpool the Edinburgh was gorgeous - especially going through the Lakes District - beautiful scenery. On arrival at Waverley station, I kid you not, there was a man sitting on a bench wearing a kilt. Welcome to Scotland, penelly! :)

After checking into my room, I went out wandering... just generally soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the Scottish accents. I climbed up to the castle but didn't go in (went there last time). Then I wandered down the Royal Mile to Holyrood House. Luckily I didn't want to go in there either, because it's closed at the moment as Queenie is due to arrive on the weekend.

This morning I'm going to go on a free walking tour provided by the hostel and tonight I'm off to Joanne's house for dinner. Joanne is a very distant cousin that my mum got in touch with while researching our Scottish ancestors. They both happened to have the same photo that included a woman who (I think) is my great great grandmother. So, Joanne and my mum are distant cousins! She lives not far from my hostel so she invited me around for a meal!

Tomorrow I leave Edinburgh for a couple of days to go on a "Haggis tour" into the Scottish Highlands. No, this is not a haggis tasting tour, as some people have thought when I've mentioned it to them! It's a backpacker tour, with commentary and stories and good times. (I went on one to Cornwall last time I was in the UK and it was brilliant). I'm looking forward to it.

Well, it's almost time for the wee walking tour so I'll leave it there for now. :)

lots of love,
Pen
