I still don't like Frank. I've just started listening to the second volume this morning (I think I'm on Chapter 4 or 5 now), where Knightley and Emma got into it regarding Frank. Although I'm willing to allow for Frank's circumstances, I still think he should have been able to talk his way into at least going to his father's wedding. If nothing else, he could have pleaded how it would look to others if he didn't, or weren't allowed to, go. If Mrs. Churchill really was so conceited and cared about her appearance to others, she would have let him go. There had to have been some possibility for him to get away for a day or two. I just really don't think he tried hard enough.

Knowing what happens in the end makes me feel sorry for Jane. The situation can't have been easy for her and I really think that had she not had her secret to keep, she would have won Emma over in the end. Emma's main objection to her was that she was cold. Had that necessary coldness not have been present, Emma might have warmed to Jane despite her obvious jealousy. Whether you like Emma or not, she is described as a person with a reasonably happy disposition and she's not evil, and so I think that she would have wamed to any reasonably sociable person, which Jane just wasn't at the time.

Mrs. Elton. I'll probably be spending my lunch with Mrs. Elton and I'm dreading it. That woman is soooo annoying. The only consolation I have is that it's obvious to everyone in Highbury that she is a decided little biatch and that no one likes her. It's also rather comforting that Mr. Elton, who I never liked because he's a pompous ass, got stuck with her. Muhahahahahaha! I try and remember Knightley's comment to Emma about Emma having chosen better for Mr. Elton than he chose for himself when I'm thinking about Mrs. Elton.

After listening to the whole Frank discussion this morning, I've decided that Knightley's comments only could have come out of intense jealousy, whether he was aware of it or not at the time. Had he not been jealous, he wouldn't have cared, or at least not that much, about Frank's behaviour. It wouldn't have effected him, so why bother putting in all that energy into arguing against Frank? That endears Knightley to me, even if he is sometimes a pompous ass.
