Pride is both Uther's biggest strength and biggest failing. The death of his wife was the fulcrum. He became focused on revenge, on destroying his guilt for her death by taking vengeance on those he blamed. Magic became anathema, magic users killed by his hand. As Camelot became a Kingdom, it became a Kingdom against magic. He's hated magic so long that it has chased all compassion from him. If he were to stop blaming magic for the wrongs in his life he would begin to question so much of what he had done. He would begin to see that he had gone too far, his pride blinding him for so long. His compassion has died, his goodness buried beneath hate, intolerance and prejudice. There was a fire inside of him, and as that fire has banked inside of him he has been left with little to cling to but his pride. There is less of the man he once was before his wife's death.
He's a son he doesn't know. A son who he's kept distant because he reminds him of his wife. He's raised him to be a King, and not as a beloved child.
Morgana is Gorlos' daughter, the child of his best friend. As such she remains a connection to his past, but a good one. Whilst he can't look at his son without seeing his wife, looking at Morgana carries no such weight. She manages to look past his defenses. It is something he rails against and that bothers him much of the time, but there are other times he allows it - that he enjoys it.
