Just supernatural critters. Irish Wolfhounds are supposedly protective animals. You see them a lot in Celtic art.

Chance has a tendency to collect other animals as well, frogs, bugs, reptiles. But he does that in the more mundane, little boy way.

though I would't be surprised if he did summon up a hellhound.
