Writer Beware: Harlequin Horizons

Nov 22, 2009 00:11

I know I have a couple of friends on my Flist who are romance writers, so this bit of marketing news is for you guys. Harlequin Romance is developing a new imprint that RWA , MWA and SFWA (that's the Romance Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America and Science Fiction and Fantasy writers of America) have tagged as vanity press.

By vanity press, I mean that the profits from the income don't come from book sales, but from the author paying the book company to publish the book.

There is more info on the Harlequin Horizons imprint here at Writer Beware: http://www.accrispin.blogspot.com/

Just so you guys know, because of this new imprint, Harlequin has lost it's approved status with SFWA, RWA and MWA.

Here's what SFWA has to say on the subject:
SFWA supports the fundamental principle that writers should be paid for their work, and even those who aspire to professional status and payment ought not to be charged for the privilege of having those aspirations.

So be very careful about publishing through Harlequin in the future.
