We all get a percentage of the royalties. The book is legal, just not authorized. It's covered under fair use doctorine.

The smart pop books have been released by this company for several years. The first ones they did were Buffy and Angel metas (Joss wrote the forwards). The last one I was in was an Alias anthology for which the guest editor was Kevin Weisman (who played Marshal in the show).

If the folks at Supernatural has a problem with the book, they could have filed an injunction or sued at any point to stop production. The editors got the website Supernatural TV to guest edit it. They held a contest to let fans submit meta for a couple of the slots in the anthology ( Dodger_Winslow got one of the slots). Kripkie and the rest have shown that they're both websavy, and they pay attention to what is going on in fandom. Even if the folks at Benbella hadn't notified them that it was in the works (they did) Kripke et. al. would have figured out that it was in production. It wouldn't have gotten to the point where there are books in the warehouse.

thank you dear, that does make me feel better.

my first fandom was csi, spn is only my 2nd, so I'm not familiar with the buffy and angel smart pop books.

I would be concerned if kripke wasn't notified, but it sounds like he was, so thats good then. in my worse case scenario, the authors were contributing their work, the book had kripke's baby's name on it and some unknown party was pocketing the money. not that I think you would get yourself into something like that, but I just wanted to be certain.

although I haven't been around fandom for too long - 5ish years maybe, when I hear of some people being around since star trek (the original, holy crap!) I've been around long enough to witness enough wank about fanfic and copyright issues... we've carved ourselves a nice little comfortable home here, and I don't want to see it ruined by getting lawyers after us, y'know?

so thanks for getting back to me so quickly, and congrats on getting your meta published, I can't wait to read it!

There are a couple of writer's resources that i use to keep up with publishers who aren't on the up and up. One of the best is Predators and Edtiors.

But Benbella has been around a while, and they've got a good track record.
