He thought he spotted her in Dallas once: Wolf-hungry eyes in a crow-thin face.
A month later, he was certain he'd caught up with her in Seattle. This time, it wasn't just her face that was crow-thin. She moved like a wraith, slipped through his grip, and was gone like a whisper.
The hunters' network was filled with whisperings of her. People called her a dark lady: Dark clothing, eyes rimmed in kohl, blonde hair streaked black. Dark blade: sometimes a sword, sometimes a scythe. Rumor said that she was doing more than just hunting demons. That at least once she crossed to Tir na nog on the horse of the black rider to retrieve a stolen baby.
That rumor gave him hope. Somewhere under all that dark, his girl was still in there, and still fighting for her humanity. Whether she liked it or not, he was going to be right there, fighting for it with her.
No matter how far or how fast Chloe Sullivan ran from him, Dean Winchester was going to find her. He was a hunter, and he was good at what he did.
It didn't matter if she didn't want to be found. Or if she had help from some mystical, demon killing, parasitic blade. Or if she had half the demons in North America scared shitless. He was going to find her, run her to ground, and get that soul-sucker out of her.
He figured he was in the right to do so, after she went behind his back to save his soul.
It hadn't been worth it. He hadn't been worth it. The idea that she would let herself get tangled up in something so seriously evil just to save him was humbling.
He was so full of conflicting emotions when it came to Chloe Sullivan. Anger, fear, awe, longing. It kept him up at night: Tossing and turning. Remembering the feel of her skin against his, the heaven inside of her. Tormenting himself with what if.
It wasn't right. She shouldn't have been the one to stand in the gap for him. He was supposed to be looking after her, protecting her. Not the other way around.
The only thing that kept him going some days was the hunt. She was easy to follow, if one knew the signs. All he had to do was spot the places that the demons were running from. And if he spent his days looking at maps, he didn't have to stare at the regret in Sam's eyes. Didn't have to risk another violent confrontation that solved nothing and left them both bloodied.
Sammy had a lot to atone for, considering that he found that damned blade to begin with. Probably would have used it too, if Chloe hadn't beaten him to the punch.
Maybe it was the sense of guilt, and maybe it was family loyalty, but Sam was researching a way to get that blade out of her. Then maybe the three of them would be square again.
Until then, there was only the anger, and the hunt.
