I'm writing from the front porch of a KOA in Lubbock Texas. So far the flies seem resistant to my bug spray.
I spent most of the afternoon at the Silent Wings museum in Lubbock texas (It's in the old lubbock terminal). For those of you who don't know, what prompted this trip was a search for history. My Grandfather was a gilder infantryman with the 101'st airborne in WWII. We were primarily interested in learning what he did.
The gliders were these metal framed things with a canvas skin. They were towed over their landing zone, then released so that they could glide to the landing zone. They were designed to hold up to 13 men, a load of equipment and supplies, or to be snatched by transport planes from the ground an d. After WWII helicopters took over the job.
Here's a photo of one in action.

I'll have a longer trip update when I get home and can organize my thoughts.
