Chapter 8

Roswell
New Mexico
Year 2000 (few lines from The Depature - I don't own them either)

It was ringing. It was annoying. It wouldn't stop ringing and the sound was really annoying. Dean tore his eyes open and he had no idea where he was. He saw right beside him a veil of a dark hair, and few second later he understood that there was girl sleeping really close to him, head on his arm. His nose was near her hair and the smell of them really woke him up - in more ways than one. Then he finally realized that the hair was Liz's hair and it was really her butt which was touching his crotch.

The phone didn't stop ringing, so Dean yanked his arm gently under Liz's head and tried to not wake her up. She made a little sound when Dean rolled away from her. She turned her head the other way, so Dean saw he peaceful face, which was flawless. Her skin was perfect and smooth and there was not worries seen on her face. The sound of the phone didn't let Dean stop moving. Quickly he searched his pants from the floor and dug his cell phone from his pocket. Liz made another sound and Dean answered in a hurry so Liz wouldn't wake up.

“Dean where the hell are you?” An angry voice asked when he had opened the connection. It was John's voice and he was mad and worried.

“Sorry, sir. I was needed elsewhere last night,” Dean said, because he didn't feel comfortable to tell the actual truth to him. He knew that John would think that Dean had done some hunting on his own, and he wouldn't like that. On the other hand, Dean didn't care: he was still a little mad about the hunt.

“I thought that something caught you, since I called twice before you answered,” John informed and still sounded mad. Dean couldn't believe what he was hearing. Twice? That couldn't be true - he always wakes up at the first. Then Dean's eyes wandered to sleeping Liz, and he understood, why he hadn't woke up. Liz was sleeping on her stomach and her hand was on the side of her head. The blanket covered Liz almost entirely, only her toes were without it.

Yeah, Dean knew why he had slept so well, and it started to scare him.

“Sorry, sir,” Dean said and tore his glance out of Liz. He had to focus to this phone call - he had to speak at a low volume not to disturb Liz's sleep and strong enough not to wake his dad's suspicions.

“Come back to the motel now. We're leaving,” John commanded and Dean's jaw dropped. Leaving? He couldn't leave. Dean gave quick glance to Liz and swallowed the sigh he wanted to do. Looking at Liz's face made it clear: leaving wasn't option for Dean. He had to be there for her when she needed him, and she did need him. If she didn't need him, why would she have come to him last night? Dean turned his back to Liz and focused to his dad and the conversation.

“Ummm.. The thing is that I can't come,” Dean finally got the words out of his mouth, and then he just stayed to wait the answer - which would be angry one.

“What?” was the answer. There was only confusion in his voice. Dean never did this - he was the better son, who never argued with his father, so this was a mild shock to John.

“I have a thing here,” Dean answered.

“You are abandoning me and your brother because of some girl?” John asked, and immediately Dean felt guilty. Right thing to do would be to leave now when Liz was still asleep, disappear without a word, vanish like ash in the wind - and that was what he had to do. It was killing Dean, but he knew that dad and Sam was all he got.

“I'm there in ten minutes, sir,” Dean said and shut the connection. He wiped his face with his hands and finally he sighed. Without looking at Liz, he picked his pants from the ground and put them on. Liz sighed in her dreams and turned around. Dean turned to look at her and saw that the worry had find its way back to her face. Dean understood that if he left now, the worry might stay there - for good. He believed that they had found something special that night, and he might break her by leaving. Like Max Evans had done. Last night he had thought he would never be a douche bag like that, but now he was...

But Dean had to go, and he knew it. His dad would never forgive him, if he left them for Liz. So Dean zipped his pants and put his socks and shoes on. He tried to push Liz to the back of his mind, but it was hard since she was sleeping right there. Only thing that he could do was not to look at her, so he kept his eyes strictly away from her. When Dean had collected all of his stuff, he walked to the window. He was ready to open it, when he heard Liz's silent groaning in her sleep.

The last look, Dean thought when he turned to look at Liz once again. She wasn't peaceful anymore - she looked like she was in a lot of pain and it brought Dean down. He couldn't leave her. What the hell, he didn't even want to leave her! Liz started to breathe harder and she sounded beaten.

“Damn it,” Dean cursed out loud and kicked his shoes off. Then he simply walked to the bed and went to lie next to Liz.

And besides he had promised her. Dean had promised Liz to solve her friend's death, no matter what and Dean had all intentions to keep that promise. He took Liz close to him and tried to comfort her. She did calm down, and she moved as close to Dean as she could. Dean smiled at her and gave a soft kiss to her forehead, before he took the phone again to his hand.

There was one last thing to do because of this decision.

Dean was little scared when he choose his dad's number - they would get into a fight over this, but Dean just couldn't leave Liz behind and he understood it now.

“Dad, I have a case. I can't just ignore it and leave. If you get in trouble, call me and I'll be there, but now my place is here, in Roswell. I have to help,” Dean explained to his dad in a silent voice. He was scared of his reaction, and was surprised by it.

“Why didn't you say you have a case? We all stay if there is more to hunt.”

“Thanks, dad, but this is something I have to do. You and Sam go on, I will catch you later,” Dean said, and wished that his dad would understand soon, since he couldn't talk much longer - he still didn't want to disturb Liz's sleep and now he was right next to her.

“Dean...,” John voice changed into a demanding one.

“Sir, with all the respect, this one is for me only,” Dean told to his dad. He couldn't accept any help, since he wasn't sure was he actually hunting something they usually did or was this normal human being. Dad would never let Dean to hunt human.

“Okay, son. But if you even think that you can’t survive it on your own, call me, okay?” John demanded and of course Dean agreed. He would never call his dad, though, because he would never admit that he can't handle it. He could still promise and John believed him.

When the phone call ended Dean didn't feel like sleeping anymore. His body was over heated and he was full of energy. Liz was right there in his arms, and she had chosen to be there. So Dean just watched Liz sleeping and gently caressed her arm, face, hair... He could never get tired of watching Liz sleep - she was so beautiful and angelic.

After just watching and touching her awhile, Dean noticed that she started to wake up. First she pouted her face and then she carefully started to open her eyes.

“Good morning, princess,” Dean said smiling and Liz smiled to him. She stretched herself and groaned at the same time. Dean thought it was cute and laughed a little.

“Morning,” Liz finally replied, but she barely got the word out of her mouth when the knock came from the door.

“Lizzie?” A male voice asked behind the door. Liz looked Dean in shock and it didn't take long from Dean to realize that the voice belonged to Liz's father.

They had no time to make plan how to act, when the door started to open. Liz almost pushed Dean out of the bed and to the floor, and then hopped out of the bed herself. Quickly she pulled her morning gown on.

“Dad!” Liz said loud when the door fully opened. Dean tried to be as small as possible behind the bed. Even breathing was hard, since he thought he was breathing too loud. Liz tried her best to hide all the possible sounds Dean made by speaking loud.

“What are you doing here?” Liz asked, and it was clear that she tried to hide the nervousness in her voice.

“I came to see if my daughter is still alive. You have any idea what time it is?” Liz's dad voice said. Then Dean heard footsteps coming closer, man's footsteps. In a panic he started to move under the bed - he really didn't want to deal with an angry father right now. But then other footsteps hurried after the first ones and apparently blocked their way.

“I was tired. Could you please go now, so I can dress in peace?” Liz asked. Dean hoped that her dad would listen to her and leave.

“Yeah, okay. Your shift starts in an hour, remember,” Liz's dad said and then Dean heard the door open and close, but still he was too tensed to breathe properly. He wasn't sure that Liz's dad had really gone.

“That was close,” Liz said appearing behind the bed, and Dean had courage to stand up. He looked at Liz and grinned.

“I would have handled him,” Dean said and Liz laughed.

“Yeah I bet,” Liz answered. Dean looked at Liz's beautiful face, where there was nothing that pointed out that she would be worried.

“Should you be going to your family? I mean I don't want to hold you here, if you have something to do,” Liz said and Dean laughed. Liz would probably get mad once Dean told her that his dad and brother already left, and Dean had indeed stayed here because of Liz.

“I'm all yours princess,” Dean just said and hopped onto the bed. Liz looked at him.

“What do you mean?” Liz asked and started to look mad already. Dean decided that he wouldn't tell her that they had already left - he didn't want her to worry about him too. If Dean told her that his family already left, because Dean wanted to stay with her, she wouldn't like it. Besides she would never understand their family affairs.

“I have no hurry to be anywhere. I'm planning to spend the whole day with you - dad and Sammy got everything under control,” Dean explained and didn't even lie that much.

“But I have a shift in an hour,” Liz told.

“Then it's a good thing that I love food.”

* * *

And Dean surely loved food. It also was useful that the cute little waiter didn't take money from him. So Dean ate the whole day and watched Liz in her work. She looked so cute in that funny little uniform of hers. Every time Liz wasn't needed in some corner of the café she came to Dean, who sat on the counter and even without asking Liz usually gave him something.

Yeah, Dean loved food and Liz loved to give it to him.

One time when Liz was hanging next to Dean and they were talking about something the Crashdown's door opened. Maria came in with a dark haired boy, and they both looked kind of beaten. First when Dean looked at them he didn't understand what was going on, but when he glanced at Liz he understood that it was about that Max-boy. Again. Dean's heart filled with compassion, when he looked at Maria, who looked like her heart had been smashed into a hundreds of pieces and after that someone had been punching her to a face.

She barely looked at Dean when she sat down in the chair next to him. Dean wanted to say something to her, something that made her feel better, but he didn't know what to say. He was happy when Liz went to her friend and hugged her.

“I can't believe this,” Maria sniffed and hugged Liz tighter. There must be more people leaving than just that Max and his whore, since Maria looked worse than Liz had. Dean turned his eyes away from the girls, because he felt like he was invading on something private. On his other side he saw the guy who had come with Maria. He was glaring at Dean and Dean suspected that either he had crush on Liz or he was just plain crazy.

“Howdy,” Dean said and nodded to him.

“Kyle Valenti, sheriff's son,” the guy introduced and gave Dean his hand. Dean took it and shook it. Sheriff's son, huh? He hoped that Kyle really didn't try to scare him with that. It was just a pathetic fact, which probably had just made Kyle life hard.

“Dean Winchester, cool enough without mentioning of dad,” Dean said and grinned to Kyle. Kyle kept glaring Dean, other hand on the counter tapping its surface.

“Cool, huh? Well, not here buddy. This is not you territory, this is mine,” Kyle pointed out, and Dean kept grinning. He found that Kyle -guy funny: he really tried to be the cool one there.

“Listen to me, Kyle, I don't have specific territory and I don't need one. Wherever I go, I'm the coolest one there - not to mention what all the ladies think,” Dean said and winked. Kyle glanced at Liz behind Dean and stood up.

“No, you listen to me Winchester - you are not going to hurt Liz...,” but Kyle wasn't able to finish his defense, when Liz cut him off.

“Kyle, could you behave? Dean is friend, and he is not going to hurt me. Dean, Kyle is my friend also so you have to behave too,” Liz said and looked demanding while glancing both of the boys, “Now shake hands and pretend to be friends, for me.” Dean sighed - for Liz, anything and he noticed Kyle was thinking like that too. They shook hands and Liz brought Maria and Kyle milkshakes.

“And Kyle's dad is ex-sheriff,” Maria said from other said of Dean. Dean looked at Maria and burst out laughing. Maria smiled him a little and turned then looked at the counter. Liz smiled a little, but she had to leave from their company, because customers needed her. Kyle himself didn't say anything - he just kept tapping the counter. Which was pretty annoying and Dean had to fight not to take his knife to remove Kyle's fingers. Or maybe just threatening with it would help.

Dean looked to both of his sides, to Maria and Kyle - neither of them made good company. They both looked kind of betrayed and beaten. Kyle seemed to be a little better than Maria: he only had that empty look in his eyes and absent essence. Maria didn't look absent, she looked like she was really there and that fact was crushing her under it. It looked that every moment was a little battle of it's own, and it was draining her.

“So... I heard that some people are leaving,” Dean said when he didn't come up with anything better. He had chosen between bad joke, or gentle comment: the little progress that had happened in his mind had decided to say gentle comment - joke would have been too much. But he had obviously chosen wrong: his words caused Maria shrink a little and Kyle to give him an angry look. Dean quickly raised his eyebrows and started to eat his french fries again. Yeah, it was a mistake, and now Dean didn't find anything to say. Even all of his jokes had left him.

When Liz came back Kyle's tapping was really getting to Dean's nerves. He had listened to it for several minutes: they hadn't talked so the only sound was the tapping and it was loud.

“Kyle.. Man, I swear to God, if you don't now stop that tapping, I will cut your fingers,” Dean warned and Kyle's fingers froze. Dean wanted just to scare him a little, because Kyle didn't know him and he just might believe that he would do that. Dean tried to ignore the fact that he really wanted to make the sound stop. Liz looked at Dean and sighed.

“Dean...”

“Well it's annoying. I have been listening to it long enough already,” Dean said, but didn't really want to argue with Liz. He knew that her friends were everything to her and Dean wanted to be part of that group too. Although, he did think that Liz could handle a little argument between them and understand that it was just a friendly thing, but Dean didn't want to test that - yet.

“It is annoying. Kyle, really don't do it anymore or I will have Dean cut your fingers,” Maria agreed, and Dean smiled to Liz as his own defense. Liz sighed and rolled her eyes. That was good sign - points to Dean.

“Well, I was leaving anyway,” Kyle murmured and got up from his seat. Dean looked at him, with one eyebrow raised.

“You are just giving up to me?” Dean asked with a little smirk. Kyle scowled to Dean and turned to look at Liz.

“Lizzie, I’m going home. I have a room to reclaim,” Kyle said and even though he tried to make his words sound funny, his voice was hollow. He turned to Maria, nodded her and then turned to leave. Dean felt a little bad about mocking him in the last moments, and he did understand that this was hard to all of them. Because of what, it was a little unclear, as was the whole thing. He just couldn't get a hang of this whole thing.

“Hey, Valenti, if you feel like cutting someone's fingers I will lend you my knife. You know, Liz's friends are my friends too,” Dean yelled after Kyle. He stopped and turned to Dean.

“I will keep that in mind, Winchester. Even though Buddha teaches us not to use violence towards our own kind,” Kyle said and grinned to Dean. There was the piece of Kyle Dean knew he would like.

“What the Hell, man? Buddha?” Dean asked.

“That's my secret. Chicks dig religious men,” Kyle said and with a light smile on his face he left the Crashdown. Dean turned to look at Liz.

“Seriously? Buddha? That guy?” Dean asked and it did sound weird to him. Kyle wasn't exactly the Buddha type. Liz nodded.

“Yeah, he found it last summer. It has done only good for him,” Liz told and Maria sighed. Both turned their eyes to her: she didn't look much better than earlier.

“I think I will go to search my Buddha at home, and hope he will help me,” Maria said and got up. Dean stayed silent, since he didn't have anything smart to say. Maria was so different from that girl they had seen yesterday.

“Okay. I will stop by after my shift, okay?” Liz said. Maria only mumbled something as an answer and left the Crashdown. Dean stared after her, thinking how screwed her life must be. Liz's silent sigh pulled him back from his thoughts. Dean wanted to ask her why Kyle and Maria were so sad too, but he didn't want to make Liz think about it since he knew it was hard for her. Instead of taking her mood down, he made eye contact with her.

“So, what should I have next? Do you have any suggestions?”

* * *

First hours had been nice: there hadn't been any rush so Liz was able to be with Dean. Then the next few hours were busier and after Kyle and Maria left, it was unbelievably boring. Dean had eaten enough french fries for rest of his life, and he probably wouldn't be able to even look at a milkshake ever again - okay for few days, at least. Even though, Dean was completely filled with food and his buttocks were numb for the sitting, he didn't let it get to his face.

Every time his head dropped from boredom, he had to remind himself why he had stayed behind: to help Liz. He wasn't helping her if she saw that Dean didn't enjoy being there. But always when the 'helping Liz' -part was reached, another question appeared: Was he really helping Liz just by sitting there, without doing anything? He had promised to find the killer with Liz, but they had already lost one whole day, and not even once they had touched the subject.

So the next time Liz walked next to Dean, he just had to take action. Liz was smiling, which made it harder. A few times Dean had to convince himself that Liz's smile wasn't coming from the heart, that she was hurting all the time and he couldn't be sure that the smile was even real.

“Ummm... Liz?” Dean said cautiously, gently pulling Liz's attention to him, “I was just thinking, that could you tell me more about the Alex's case? I know it's tough for you, but if I am going to help you, I need to know the facts.” Liz looked a bit bumped when she stared at Dean. Now Dean wasn't going to give up to her eyes - he had made a promise, and one thing he could do was hunt. It was exactly what he was going to do.

“Let's not worry about it today. We have time right?” Liz said and tried to leave the scene. But Dean didn't give up. He stood up and walked after her.

“What is going on? I thought you wanted to solve this,” Dean said. Liz stopped and turned to him. She opened her mouth to open, but female voice from the counter cut her off.

“Larek. He says his name is Larek, and he's an alien. Who is Larek?” A dark haired, tall woman talked to herself near the counter. She had a wondering and a little absent look in her eyes. Dean grinned to her babbling, but a look to Liz's face made him wipe it off. Liz looked surprised, shocked and a little bit of panicked.

“Miss DeLuca?”, she asked out loud and then said to Dean, “That is Amy DeLuca, Maria's mom.” Liz walked a little closer to Amy and Dean followed her a little behind.

“And he's taken over this whole place. And he's holding us hostage here with a gun. He's pointing gun at my daughter. He threatened my daughter,” Amy's voice started to reach panic. Liz hurried to her and touched her arm. Dean stayed a few steps away. When Liz touched Amy's hand it looked like she would have snapped out of it. She looked down at Liz and smiled.

“Hey, Liz,” Amy said and placed her hand to the counter. Dean thought he saw everything in slow motion, when Amy started to tap the surface of the counter. Liz's eyes moved from Amy's eyes to her tapping fingers, and Dean could see the understanding spread to Liz's face.

“Oh my God,“ Liz gasped and without saying anything to anyone she ran to the backroom. Dean watched her go, gave quick smile to Amy and rushed after her. When he reached the backroom, Liz was already on the phone.

“... tapping! Just go to Kyle's, Maria. It's important. Ask if he remembers anything, make him remember. I will get there as soon as I can,” Liz didn't wait for answers when she shut her phone and rushed past Dean, without saying anything, or without even looking at him. Dean stared at her in confusion, when she walked to Amy and soon Amy left the café, looking even more confused than Dean.

When Liz started to move towards another customer, Dean moved. Quickly he walked to Liz and dragged her aside. His grip wasn't tight enough to hurt, but not loose enough to get away.

“What the Hell, Liz?” Dean asked and for the first time he was on his hunter mode when he looked at Liz. She has just realized something - apparently something big, but she wasn't going to tell him. She had dragged Dean into her mess without maybe even realizing it, but by coming to his room she had allowed Dean to care about her.

“Dean, let go of me,” Liz said in a sharp voice. Yeah, she really had realized something big. She had changed in a second from that sweet little waitress to this woman on a mission. But Dean wasn't going to let her be on that mission alone.

“I'm not Max. You can't scare me off with few angry words and cold eyes. It takes more than that to make me run away. You made me part of this so you have to let me be a part of this then,” the whole time Dean spoke he stared Liz into eyes. She tried to respond to the stare, but her eyes went all blurry about the tears, which Dean words had caused.

“I can't make you part of this. Not truly,” Liz whispered and with the last of her power, she kept her voice stable.

“Then I'm in as much as I can,” Dean told her and let go of her arm gently, “I will empty the place, and then you will tell me what you can.” Without answer Dean walked to the nearest table, where there were people. He told them a lie about a minor fire in the kitchen, which really wasn't causing any danger to anyone, but the place had to be closed, just as a precaution. He walked around the whole place, and told the same story in every table where still were people left. They left in peace, since they all did respect café owner’s desire to keep the customers safe.

The lock clicked when Dean locked the front door, after the last customer had gone. While Dean had cleared the whole café, Liz had again disappeared somewhere. When Dean left to search her, he had a bad feeling that she might have left on her own, leaving Dean behind. Maybe she would have thought something as stupid as Dean's safety or something like that.

Dean started to walk towards the swing door that leaded to the backroom. He would search the whole house if he needed to. Before he even reached the door, it opened and Liz came out. She was wearing her normal clothes instead of her uniform. She looked straightly to Dean.

“You just get back to your motel. I will take it from here,” Liz said and then took a few steps towards the front door, but Dean moved to her path.

“You are cute, when you try to make me leave. But princess, it isn't working,” Dean told Liz. He looked into her eyes, and she looked into his. Both of them tried to make the other back down, with just a glare.

“Whatever, but you can't come with me,” Liz finally said when she realize that their staring contest was a waste of time.

“If you won't let me come with you, I'll just follow you,” Dean replied and smirked to her. He could see how that made her annoyed.

“And here I was thinking that I found a nice guy,” Liz smirked back to Dean and took a few steps again.

“Nice? Is that how you think of me? I'm disappointed. Since, you see, I'm every girl's wet dream,” Dean told and kept the grin on his face.

“Maybe in your wet dreams,” Liz mumbled and started to walk towards the front door. It was useless, when Dean caught her hand when she was walking past him.

“Why don't you let me come?” Dean asked in a demanding voice. Liz looked at him.

“Because it's dangerous,” Liz answered in a sad voice. They looked into each other’s eyes, feeling a little connection between them, when Liz's phone rang. Liz pulled back and Dean let her arm go. Quickly Liz answered the phone.

“God.. I'm coming,” were the only words Liz said. She put her cell phone away and headed to the doors without saying anything. Dean walked after her.

“We are taking the Impala,” Dean announced.

“First you are not going to come and secondly we are not taking your car,” Liz said, and even when the situation was so odd and awkward, Dean grinned.

“Princess, you don't have a car,” Dean reminded her and he knew he was right. So without any further objects, only minor comment that Liz could drive since Dean didn't know where to, they went to the car and headed to the desert.

Now Dean let his baby show Liz what she was made of. They raced along the streets. Dean had to glance at Liz to see her face expressions, but she didn't look scared - only anxious. When they passed two buildings, Dean didn't even have time to react to the young man who jumped in front of the car. Dean couldn't do nothing when the man hit the car and rolled along the road, like he was dead.

Dean and Liz glanced to each other, when Dean had stopped the car. He was freaking out - he probably had killed someone. A human being. His hands were squeezing the wheel as hard as he could, when he tried to stay calm. Liz looked scared, but her eyes weren't blaming Dean.

They just sat there a moment, until Dean opened the car's door. He didn't feel so good, but he had to check if that man was still alive, and then call help. He heard door open behind him, and when he looked there, he saw Liz smiling understanding to Dean and he understood that she would come with him. Dean walked in front of the car and Liz walked to him. Gently Liz gave Dean her hand and Dean grabbed it. With one little squeeze of their hands, Dean started to walk towards the man and Liz walked beside him. Dean felt like he could deal with anything now that Liz stood there beside him.

Dean kneeled next to the man, and Liz placed her hand to Dean's shoulder.

“Is he dead?” Liz asked quietly. Dean moved his hand to towards the man's neck to feel the pulse, but he never got to touch him.

The man opened his eyes and before Liz or Dean could do anything or even a react, a bunch of people were on them. The man who was lying in the ground stood up and hit Dean to face. At the same time two girls, both blond and robust, grabbed Liz and dragged her away from Dean.

“Dean!! Dean!!” Liz screamed when she tried to fight the girls off. But she was so petite that she had no chance against those girls, and she was too gentle to even know how to do it. The girls were just smirking to her, and it pissed Dean off. He used all of his powers and techniques to get free from those people who were keeping him from saving Liz. Everything was a waste of time, since there were too many and they were too strong. Dean didn't even have any idea how many he had on him, but all he could see was Liz who didn't have any chances to get away.

“Let's kill the guy,” someone said behind Dean. Dean started to fight harder - shit he didn't want to die. He didn't even know what these people were. He was sure that they were something supernatural - they were way too strong to be anything else, but he had never seen anything like that.

“No! We only want the girl,” said the man who had been lying on the ground.

“Over my dead body,” Dean sweared. It slowly came to him that they only wanted Liz, and he just had given her to them. He had fallen for their trick even though he was supposed to know those things.

“Believe me boy, we could do that too, but we need only her and you are no threat to us,” the same man said, and then he hit Dean so hard, that everything went black in his eyes. Last thing he heard was Liz screaming horrified, yelling Dean's name. But Dean's powers just weren't enough to drag himself back to full conscious. And then the voices went away and Dean had no idea about the world around him.

* * *

Dean wasn't sure how long he had been there when he came back to consciousness. He felt his muscles hurt and he was sore all over. The blood running on his face and he felt trickling on the left side of his face. He tried to remember how he got there and wondered what could have beaten him like that. Then all the memories came to him at once. He jumped up and all the pain he was feeling was nothing. Only one pain got to him, and it was the pain of failing; pain of losing Liz.

When his feet touched the ground, he was already running. He didn't have any clue how long he had been there, so he didn't know how far away the sons of bitches could be right now. Dean didn't want to waste even a second, he had wasted them too much enough by blacking out. So he started to search places nearby on foot. He ran and he ran. No rock left unturned, but still he found nothing. Not even a smallest reminder of Liz. Eventually Dean got back to his car, but he wasn't giving up. No way. Not yet.

That night the Impala could be seen all over Roswell. Dean drove around hoping to find Liz. He had even gone back to the Crashdown and checked her room, but like he had suspected, the room was empty. As morning was coming, Dean had returned to the place where they had taken her.

The tears no longer stayed back - silent sadness had got the best of Dean, when he got out of the Impala and looked around himself. The buildings were quiet, but Dean kept hoping that he could hear Liz's voice somewhere. He kept hoping that Liz would walk to him, laughing, saying 'I caught ya' and then telling him that it all was just one big joke. Dean wouldn't even be mad, he would be relieved. He would hug Liz so tight, and tell her that she was best thing that Dean had ever had.

The best thing... And still, he had screwed everything up - he had let her down. Dean's knees gave in, in the middle of the road and he sank to the hard asphalt. It was cold and hard, but Dean felt like nothing could be enough punishment.

Maybe it all was just a test. Liz was testing to see if Dean cold be her man, and Dean had failed. He wasn't man at all. He was nothing - just a big loser trying to play the part of hero. Liz would never take him, but he would be happy even about that - at least Liz would be okay. The pressure on Dean's chest just kept growing. It made breathing hard; Dean gasped in a fast rhythm trying to get some air to his lungs. Thinking got harder every breath he took. His mind wanted to block the situation and lack of air didn't help either.

It was no test, or no joke. It was real. Something had caught her, and Dean had broken his promise.

He was a hunter. He had grown up to protect people in this kind of situation. Why was all that he had learned not enough to save Liz?

He had failed.

He had lost the rare flower that he had been given to protect.

“Liz,” Dean whispered out loud and a tear dropped from his cheek to the ground.

“I'm sorry. I promised to keep you safe, but I failed. I'm so sorry.”
