I actually didn't much care for Commander Eyebrows the first time through. I found his acting barely tolerable, and I was happy to see him replaced, even though Bruce Boxleitner is hardly an example of stellar acting, himself. But this time through I was quite fond of him, and three or so eps in to season 2, Sheridan is wearing on me more than I remember, so it will be very interesting to see how it all shakes out this time around. Though Sheridan seems pretentious to me at the beginning, whereas at least by the end, well, perhaps he never becomes less pretentious, but at least he sort of earns the right to be. It would be interesting to know how it would have worked out if Sinclair had stayed. Some of the other particularly bad s1 acting did sort of work its way out of people's system, at least to a certain extent (both Garibaldi and Ivanova have some pretty awful moments early on, for instance, but they certainly get better--even if Jerry Doyle and Claudia Christian were never going to be Emmy contenders, either).

Babylon 5, even with its dodgy sets, CGI, acting, and dialogue like something out of a noir thriller by way of a philosophy textbook manages to just be awesome no matter how many years pass

This is such an excellent way to describe it. And yes!
