Doctor Song 6.02: The Day of the Moon

May 01, 2011 10:26

So I'm less "omg, must make post!!!" this week (oh how short-lived the gleeful return to BSG levels of fangirling in real time--probably healthier for everyone), but a few thoughts on River, et. al. nonetheless:

This ep was less River-centric than I might have liked, but she made up for that by being COMPLETELY AWESOME at every point!!!!!! The diving off the building, the shooting, the flirting (the flirting while shooting), the kissing!!!! RIIIIIIIVEEEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!! If you're not married to the Doctor, will you please marry me???? I need to rewatch that whole last bit with the shooting and flirting and kissing a few more times, methinks.

Also! There was stuff other than River that I quite liked in this ep! Namely, the Amy pov on the Silence, which was fantastically creepy. I had been pretty disappointed in these bad guys last week. "Silence Will Fall!!!!" is such a terrifying kind of phrase, mostly because of its abstractness: the whole absence/presence thing, etc. But then they went and personified Silence as these weird alien men in black dudes. And they were creepy enough, I guess, but ordinary levels of sci fi villain creepy, rather than the epic levels of creepy you'd expect from a name like The Silence. But then we got in Amy's head and saw her realization of what she'd seen but not remembered, and that, my friends, was epic. So well done on overcoming the aliens who were perhaps not initially as scary as they were supposed to be!

I'm very wtf about the plot, incidentally, but I'm willing to handwave that, especially since I suspect we'll be revisiting all of this later. But what happened during those missing three months? What's the connection to future!Doctor's death? What's up with the wee Time Girl? (That glowy stuff is indicative of Time Lord regeneration, right? I've not seen enough of this show overall to know what's what with all that...)

And I should talk about the kiss because I'm such an unabashed Doctor/River shipper, so on one hand I was GLEEFUL, but on the other, it wasn't quite what I'd hoped for when I kept wanting them to MAKE OUT ALREADY. First, though, THERE WAS KISSING!!!! And yes, maybe he flapped his hands about and was a little unsure of himself, but it lasted a whole lot longer than it would have if he wasn't into the idea. I'm still anticipating the day when he hauls off and kisses her, though--just saying.

But they also used the kiss to reinforce this whole "they're moving in opposite directions" thing, with the idea that their first kiss for him is their last kiss for her, and I don't understand this!!! I don't understand it because clearly they don't actually work that way, at least not entirely, and there has been lots of evidence for this in the show. (And don't worry, River, your Doctor will appear at some point to give you his screwdriver, at least, and I rather like to think that at some point between whenever you get out of Storm Cage and the Library, you and that future Doctor have all kinds of adventures and lots of sex, and you also go get yourself a professorship somewhere because you don't only live for the days when you see him. And I have seen nothing on this show to indicate that this won't happen!)

Also, the whole back to front thing is so cliched and boring: the stuff of sentimental stories like Benjamin Button and The Time-Traveler's Wife (disclaimer: I've not read or seen either), not the complicated timey-wimey hijinks of River and the Doctor.

Dare I hope that the point of all this is that River has it a little wrong? That she thinks they're going back to front, and then at some point she realizes it's more complicated than that?

Oh well. THERE WAS KISSING AND REALLY BADASS SHOOTING.

I will not promise to review the River-less episodes. But I probably will at least endeavor to watch them, which is more than I can say for any previous season of Who. We'll see.

I'm not sure I've got much in the way of other news, fannish or otherwise. Oh, except that they were filming Covert Affairs outside my office the other day, and I spotted Kari Matchett, probably best known to most of you (and to me) as Maggie Collins from Leverage. They're constantly filming things in my general vicinity, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've seen an actor I've recognized (on a film set, as opposed to just out and about, which happens somewhat more frequently).

Still watching Body of Proof, even though it's decidedly mediocre. Still watching The Killing, which I continue to enjoy, though it's not been as engaging the past couple of weeks as it was right at the beginning--midseason slump, perhaps? Looking forward to the return of Leverage and Rizzoli and Isles, whenever that may be. And looking forward to summer, period, and about to go nuts with all the cold and rain.

So yes. Not so exciting times chez
pellucid. :)
