In case anyone who cares didn't realize this: Lie to Me returns this evening! I admit I'm a little skeptical that the things I didn't like about the first half of season 2 will be perpetuated in the back half (especially after I saw an interview with one of the writers who basically said that turning it into The Show Where Cal Takes Lots of Stupid Risks was sort of what they were aiming for), but I'll still be glad to have Gillian back on my TV. Also, there was a preview with Jennifer Beals in it: more Zoe!!!

For the past year, my city has been consumed on various levels by the aftermath of a bike-vs-motorist confrontation that left the cyclist dead and the former attorney general of Ontario (who was driving the car) arrested. Fast-forward to a couple of weeks ago, when all charges against the driver were dropped, to the horror of many in the cycling community. The whole incident was a tragic mess, and no one denies that there was fault on both sides, but at the end of the day, one man is dead and the other is free to continue pursuing his political career. This is one of the better things I've read about the case, pointing out the way that power and privilege--both those associated with money and class and those associated with the vehicle one rides/drives--have quite possibly gotten in the way of justice in this case.

A fascinating and vaguely horrifying piece from the New Yorker on US healthcare costs and how perhaps in worrying so much about who is writing healthcare providers their checks, we're missing the fact that the real problem is how big those checks are.

Via cofax7, apparently a male screenwriter heard about the Bechdel Test and went "hmm, maybe I should think about that". It's a little sad that this constitutes potentially hopeful news, but well, better than nothing?

And I've read several really excellent fics in the past couple of days:

Someone told me that Yahtzee was where I needed to go for fic about Jack and Irina, and so far I'm not disappointed in the least! I've been trying to hold off on fic until I've finished watching the parts that I'm intending to watch, but I'm also impatient and well-spoiled, and while I've managed to resist the really epic fic so far, I couldn't resist this gorgeous, mid-length piece, and I do not regret that decision! No for Yes skips between Irina's perspective as Laura in the '70s and Jack's perspective between seasons 2 and 3 (possibly AU? I'm not sure how much eventually gets revealed about the missing years). It's quiet and carefully developed and hurts in all the right ways. Fundamentally, Jack and Irina's story seems to me to be about how love doesn't conquer all, but sometimes it won't go away, either, no matter how much hate and betrayal gets in between people. (Jack/Irina, rated Mature)

And this remix fic about CJ Cregg is a little too wonderful for words. CJ and feminism and compromises and the women of Qumar: The Truth About Her Life (Flickering Firebrand Remix) (gen, CJ-centric)

And just to demonstrate that sometimes I do branch out, have a fic about boys! Remember the TSCC episode about Martin Bedell? halcyon_shift gives us his story: The Fire Handler (gen, PG-13)

lie to me, fic rec, bike
