I enjoyed last night's episode immensely. I didn't know that was Dana Delaney, but the interactions between she and Kate and Castle were a lot of fun. Also, I don't want Castle's mom to go away! I laughed to see her watching a clip of herself on The Incredible Hulk - loved that show when I was a kid. :)

Yes, the scene with her watching The Incredible Hulk was gold! I don't imagine, though, that even if Martha does move out that we'll be seeing less of her.

And yes, overall, it was an excellent episode, I thought. I'm looking forward to part 2.

Last night's episode was a delightful pause in my otherwise crazy day. I think I agree with everything you say here, especially about the differences between Beckett and Dana Delany that emphasize just how human Beckett really is. I hadn't quite thought about it yet, but yes, I think that was a deliberate choice. (I hope so!)

And I agree that it is highly unlikely that they blew Kate up (at least, I think it is unlikely that they blew her up more than a little bit). But then again, it could totally become the Castle and Dana Delany show . . . I mean, I'd watch that, too. ;)

Okay, I confess I thought that but then didn't want to sound anti-Kate if I said it! Because I DO love Kate, and I don't want her to be blown up (and don't think she is blown up, either), and I like the show just fine like it is. And yet...I would totally watch Nathan Fillion and Dana Delany every week, oh yes!

I think what bugs me about the portrayal of Beckett--in this ep and in general--is that I can't always tell whether some of these things are intentional or not. Because they'll kind of mostly work, yet they'll leave me with just enough doubt that I'm not sure if Katic is playing awkward (ie, in every scene in which Beckett has dressed up) or not-flashy or whatever, or if she just is awkward or not-flashy.

Dana Delany FTW! It really was impossible to look at anyone else when she was onscreen (except, of course for Nathan *g*).

I've always seen the character of Beckett as being quietly strong, if that makes sense. She certainly doesn't have the presence that Delany's character exhibits (no, I can't remember her name either - do you think that means something?) but I kind of like that about her. She's steady and strong and determined - but not fearless. In some ways I think it's the fear that makes her all of those other things.

And I feel like if she were going to die, there would have been spoilers.

Also? Cancellation. *g*

I agree with you about Beckett, but as I was saying above to gabolange, I think what somewhat consistently bothers me (though on a low level) about Stana Katic's acting is that I can never quite tell whether she's playing the quietness, the non-flashiness, the awkwardness, etc. on purpose, as an acting choice, or if that's just the way it comes across. There's this fine line between portraying the character that way and having the character come across that way because the actor lacks presence, and with Katic I can't decide which I think it is. But yes, I do think Beckett's character is all of those things, which is why I love all of fialka's Beckett fic so much: because Fi writes perfect Beckett, but with a presence and a solidity that I sometimes find missing from the show itself.

No death! No cancellation!!! Only minor maiming, perhaps, in order to create angst, and then triumphant case-solving! :)

It's interesting because, thinking back, I remember that I had difficulty with Beckett's character early in season 1, though I was never really able to articulate why. Maybe what you mention above is it? And I've gotten used to it so it doesn't bother me as much anymore? *shrugs* I'll have to pay more attention next week to see if this very important mystery can be solved. *g*

No death! No cancellation!!!

Indeed! But I am all for the minor angst and triumphant case solving - with possibly a side of fluffy UST once all is said and done.

Also? I am now going to wander over and check out this fic of which you speak; I could use some good fic right about now.

...since I'm practically never on LJ now, but seeing as Castle just started airing in the UK, I did the obvious thing and came looking for flister's opinions of it, lol. And I'm glad I came across yours, because what you say about Beckett/Katic was something that was playing in the back of my mind which I couldn't quite articulate - I'd only seen the pilot episode and was worried from that that I wasn't, actually, going to like Beckett much. I jumped from that to a two-week holiday state-side where I saw some series 2 episodes, in which I was more impressed by her; what you say about the point is more that Kate is normal, human, not larger than life though is what clicked with me, because I think what confused me with only seeing a few episodes was, like you said, the sort of lack-of-presence of Kate against what I would expect from a typical cop-show formula. It'll be interesting to go back and watch the first season now, and see the way they develop the character. Hmm.
