Holy Kill Bill Volume 2!

Taking a break from self-pity to focus on dorkier pursuits. Like convincing everyone I know to watch my latest TV obsession, The Middleman.

It's sort of like a Pushing Daisies-Doctor Who hybrid, as far as humor goes. It's also kind of like a living, breathing comic book, which makes sense as its adapted from a comic book of the same name, written by the producer of the show. Lots of weird monsters, space aliens, and comic-book baddies. It's also extremely witty, with enough geeky references to make me foam at the mouth. Mario Bava? Check. Zombi 2? Check. Old westerns? Check.

The show sort of reminds me of a live-action Saturday morning cartoon, but written for grown-ups. I don't recall any bosses on TMNT being referred to as "Sexy Boss Man" or "Pillow Lips." The descriptions are apt, of course, though. Matt Keesler who plays the eponymous Middleman is pretty easy on the eyes, and Natalie Morales who plays Wendy Watson might just be the hottest dork on television.

It's silly, it's smart, it features vampiric puppets, zombie fish and succubi-cum-fashion models. What's not to love?

Oh, right. The fandom. I'm all in favor of the two mains together, but if that were to EVER happen, it would require getting past the whole "you're the closest thing I've ever had to a father" thing. Someone commented on the creator's journal that he would be squicked out by Wendy and the Middleman getting together because of the pseudo-incest of it, given the nature of their father/daughter relationship. I could only think, "Oh, hi. You've never met fandom, have you?" My advice is to stay far away from any MM/WW communities. It's truly frightening.

But for serious, the show's amazing. It's hilarious and creative, and my fingers are crossed that it gets renewed for a second season.
