Well, I now have a trial version of AVG as my virus protection. Worried by a notice that came up saying 30 days trial-I remember a trial firewall that ran out of time and did $140 odd in damage as it stopped working. Worse than the cost was the loss of certain non-Windows package fonts when the computer people re-installed Windows-Greek, Hebrew and (saddest of all) Gothic (as in Wulfila, not as in Goethe). Greek and Hebrew characters are included in extensions of a number of common fonts, such as Times New Roman and Arial, but I haven't managed to score a Gothic. Actually, the Greek sections of the fonts never seem to include a full range of diacritic forms of vowels-acutes, the odd breathing, and that's it.
I was looking through the range of fonts available in Microsoft Word. I got the package for my previous laptop, but hadn't fully explored the fonts. Some of these have a vast array of Chinese ideographs in the extensions. I calculate that one font, Batang, had around 30,000 characters. Actually the Chinese seems to be outweighed by a system called Hangul-the symbols have descriptors like "Hangul syllable Tikeut Wae Rieulthieuth". It takes a good half of the total array-the bottom half. The Chinese ones take up most of the rest of the space-all of them bearing the label, "CJK Unified Ideograph". There are Hangul letters as well, above the Chinese characters. The letters have simpler labels than the syllables-like "Hangul Letter Yeorinhieuh". In putting a capital on "Letter", but not on "syllable", I am faithfully reproducing what I found.
Still, I have 109 Gb of hard drive, and the reduction of free memory caused by installing AVG, whether permanent or temporary, is slight-103 Gb to 101. So I don't begrudge the amount of memory given over to characters I shall never use. But with such a vast array of characters spread across an also impressive array of fonts, you'd think some space could have been found for Wulfila.
