Currently reading Barbara Tuchman's The march of folly: from Troy to Vietnam, a book about the persistent pursuit by governments of policies contrary to their own interests. The section on the Kennedy administration's Vietnam policy contains the following sentence:
"The first test was, unhappily, a grotesque and humiliating defeat."
And despite the Ashes jubilation on my flist, my brain said, "Huh? Why is she writing about the cricket?"
