Barbara Hambly's Benjamin January series of crime novels beginning with A Free Man of Color, set in 1830s New Orleans shortly after Louisiana was ceded from France to the US. The protagonist is a free black man who was born the son of a white French landowner and his slave-born mistress, trains in Paris as a physician and returns home after the death of his wife, to make a living mostly as a musician since his race limits his medical options. These are wonderful in so many ways - atmosphere, character, dialogue, history, plot, prose, you name it - and thoughtful with it, that it always astonishes me how relatively little known they are.
