"You philosophically seek the thing per se, whereas I direct my efforts simply toward a maximum of appearance in close correlation with the unknown reality. If one moves in the sphere of harmonised appearances, one cannot be far removed from reality, or at least from what we can perceive of it. All I have done is to look a what the world has shown me, so as to bear witness to it with my brush. Is that so little? Your mistake is to try to reduce the world to your dimensions, whereas your self-knowledge ought surely to grow as your knowledge of things increases. Let us help each other, hand in hand, to learn to see better and better."
