Zack and Squall talk. Kinda.

“Yeah, Spike here kicked Seph’s ass back when he was just a grunt and Seph was the worlds greatest General!”

Squall looked up from the bowl where she was mixing powdered sugar and milk. “Of course.”

“And then he huh?” Zack blinked, a splash of chocolate batter on his cheek bringing back a forceful image of Laguna.

“Of course he did. He had to.”

“Well, yeah but, you could sound a little more impressed than that. I mean, I did my bit of softening Seph up some and getting my ass handed to me.”

“You were stronger then, right? SOLDIER. It makes sense you lost.” Squall continues stirring, eyeing the consistency of the overly sweet goop warily. She didn’t miss Zack’s narrow-eyed stare but to her it was blatantly obvious what the outcome of such a match up would be.

“Okay, I’ll bite, since you weren’t there, and you haven’t seen us go full out like, ever. What am I missing in that freaky-brain logic of yours?”

She set the bowl down and turned on the tap, rinsing her hands off as she pondered how to word this. “Sephiroth was the worlds greatest General. He knew how to fight you, what your limits were, how far to push you and how far would break you. He didn’t kill you because he didn’t have to. He knew everything about your fighting style and how best to neutralize you. Cloud was an unknown factor. Untrained, unenhanced, with nothing but his wits, his faith and his rage. Sephiroth underestimated him. Cloud didn’t know his own limits, how could Sephiroth? The outcome is predetermined; Cloud had more to loose, he had more reason to fight, he would win.”

She shrugged and dried her hands eyes gazing into the past for a moment before resting on startled violet. “In war, the one who fights with the greater passion wins. Even if he dies doing so.”

“You think I didn’t give it my all?”

She smiled sadly and headed for the refrigerator. “You couldn’t, Sephiroth was your friend. I never could.”
