of loud talkers and other annoyances

in my days of youth, i was known as having a loud mouth. i was a loud talker and learned to control my own volume due to teasing and whatnot. add to the fact that i was quite an idiot socially but smart in class, wore glasses, was taller and larger than most girls in my class...i was a walking target for pretty much anything and everything except acceptance.

over time, and through working on my music training, i have learned to curb the sound of my voice. singers, just like athletes, can feel it when they work their muscles unnecessarily hard. singers are trained to keep their voices in good shape because it's their livelihood, and one of the many ways to wreck your voice is by talking too much and too loudly. hence, i speak softer pretty much all the time now, except in a crowded loud place or when laughing at something in a movie or on tv.

at my day job, i work in a cube and, not to sound high-and-mighty, but i am surrounded by other people who don't know what i know about the voice. these same people...lowly assistants and big shots alike, don't understand that you don't need to yell into a phone or at anyone in order to be heard.

one of my coworkers is quite bad about this. she is a consistently loud talker which is actually opposite of her personality...she's pretty mellow and laid back most of the time, but on the phone she doesn't know to lower her volume...unless she's telling a secret or something, and considering the last time she kept a secret, she kept it really well for months and it has thoroughly changed how i view her. anyhow, when she is on the phone, i find it hard to talk on my own phone because her voice is so loud that it's distracting. it's also bad because now she and i face other in the cube, so her voice is at me. she also doesn't have a headset, which i think does affect how you speak into a phone.

then again, i'm hypersensitive to sound in general and don't like to talk loud or be near loudtalkers...which is why i rant about people's behavior on public transportation.

i wonder sometimes if my neighbor workers' behavior is also due to the fact that this floor was pretty quiet until all of us moved here. maybe they are used to being loud because nobody else was around.

*sigh*
