books so far this summer:
1. finished lone ranger and tonto fistfight in heaven (sherman alexie): the rest of it didn't disappoint. it's the reason i'm interested in native american studies, basically. an excellent book.
2. native speaker (chang rae lee): as good, if not better than, aloft, his most recent novel (which i read in cmlt) if you are interested in immigrant issues, this is awesome. if you like a good novel, it's also excellent. i'll definitely want to read gesture life (the other of his 3 novels)
3. ecology of a cracker childhood (janisse ray): if you feel strongly about the south, nature, or family ties, this is excellent. i hope she writes something else, because i love and truly identify with her voice.
4. me talk pretty one day: (david sedaris) fucking hilarious. i recommend this to EVERYONE.
5. song of solomon (toni morrison): some fucked up stuff, but very intense and just all around good. very strong characters and a story that really takes hold of you. lots of surprises.
now i'm working on their eyes were watching god (zora neale hurston) i'll probably finish it tomorrow or tuesday. once i've finished a few more, i'll update with another mini-review. it's nice, i'm not used to having so much down time during the summer, and reading so much. plus i think my overall reading skills have improved, and i've picked some slightly less ambitious pieces. (things like catch-22 or a farewell to arms aren't exactly the quickest reads) so yeah. i feel academically productive, yay!
