Addictions (I apologize in advance if this is too serious for LJ)moftsdOctober 11 2009, 00:49:05 UTC
I've come up with a concept of addiction: it's what you're always thinking about, even when you're not doing or thinking something about the substance or activity of your addiction. It's worked pretty well to help me identify some minor addictions (afflictions? compulsions?) in myself, and to help illustrate to others how a cigarette or a bottle of booze can exert so much control over you. By themselves, they are inert, but your relationship to them is what's f'd up and making it hard for other people to be with you.
Coming from that perspective of addiction, as I read your post I considered that the addict here is not the chess player. It might be the addiction labeler (and, ostensibly, the TV watcher). After all, the nature of this existence seems to be that whatever you have inside of yourself tends to appear outside of yourself.
