This is a slashy snippet for String B, with references to John/Cameron.
"Colonel," Rodney said, clearing his throat. "May I have a word? In... in private?"
Sheppard looked him over appraisingly and then jerked his head to the left. Rodney followed when he stepped way. Sheppard led him to an empty lab and leaned against a bench. "Well?" he said, crossing his arms.
Rodney's face turned beet red as he struggled to find the right words. "I... I saw something yesterday." Sheppard's eyes narrowed but he didn't say anything so Rodney stumbled on. "I saw you and... and Mitchell in the docking bay."
Sheppard inhaled sharply but his face stayed blank.
"I just... I wanted to let you know that it might pay to be a little more... careful."
"Were you the only one?" Sheppard asked, his words short and clipped.
"Yes, yes," Rodney replied hastily. "I was alone."
Sheppard's posture relaxed infinitesimally. "Thanks for the heads-up, McKay."
Now it was Rodney's turn to appraise the soldier. He had carefully avoided either explanation or denial and that in itself spoke volumes. Rodney huffed in a breath and plowed on. "I hope you know what you're doing."
Sheppard's mouth twitched and Rodney couldn't tell if it was meant to be a smile or a grimace. "Don't worry about me," Sheppard drawled. "Just make sure you don't tell anyone else."
The words hung in the air between them, an almost-threat, and Rodney was suddenly acutely aware of all the 'accidents' Mitchell and Sheppard could arrange if he DID let it slip. Rodney swallowed the lump of terror in his throat. Sheppard did smile then and tipped him a wink before walking out. Rodney let out his breath in a rush of relief and muttered, "Bastard." before scurrying after Sheppard.
