Since my Internet is down again (this is getting to be way to common an occurrence lately) I’m writing this up in Word to post when I can.
I had a good visit with my mom this weekend. She came in Saturday around lunchtime. She was impressed with how well I had cleaned the house. Now that it’s this clean, I plan to do what I can to keep it this way. Yes, there are still areas that need to be “polished” but it’s so much better than what it was the last time she visited.
We didn’t really do much on Saturday after she came in, which considering she had driven five and a half hours isn’t too surprising. We decided to have our Mother’s Day meal for dinner rather than having to fight the crowds on Sunday. Gavin had a fever Saturday night so he didn’t sleep well and neither did I. His fever broke during the night though.
Sunday morning Mom tried to get me to go to church (again) and seemed disappointed when I answered, “So the only time you go to church is when you come to Auburn?” with an honest “Yes.” She just doesn’t seem to understand the fact that Lee and I are not “religious” people. She keeps repeating the fact that if it wasn’t for church she and Dad would never have made friends any of the times they moved. That’s fine. Lee and I are making friends our own ways.
After being shot down on going to church Mom decided, we should go over to Jacksonville to visit Mary Ellen and her parents and to Amelia Island to visit her friend Dolores. Mary Ellen had been married to my Uncle Harold and is still family even though he passed away 22 years ago and she since remarried. On the way down we got routed off the interstate for a little bit due to the wildfires so it meant we were a little later getting over there than we intended.
It was good seeing Mary Ellen, her husband James, and her parents again. They look good for being 86 and 80, but are very frail. Since they live 2 and 1/2 blocks from the beach, we took Gavin down for his first visit to the ocean.
He wasn't too sure of it at first. I stood in the shallow water and kept lowering him down. Finally, he left his feet down and stood there, but he didn't want to let go of me. The water didn't feel cold to me, but it may have been to him. At one point, he lost his balance and fell down as a wave came in getting splashed. That was it, he was done and climbing me like a tree! He wouldn't even really hunt for seashells. He kept trying to go back up to the boardwalk and wanted everyone else to go back up there too. We went back to Frank and Marion's house for a little bit longer before heading to go see Dolores.
Mom wanted to take the ferry to Amelia Island so we headed to where we needed to go only to find a road with a line of cars stopped due to several police cars, a fire truck and other emergency vehicles. At one point when we were waiting a Mobile Crime Unit van came around the line of parked cars. After a while, most of the cars in front of us started turning around and leaving. A policeman came up to our car and said it would be about 2 hours before the road was clear. We asked for directions to Amelia Island and headed on our way. When we got to the other side of where the ferry would let out Mom pulled over to call her friend. While we were trying to call her a ferry attendant came over and said the ferry was shut down right then because there had been a bad accident on the other end and someone had died. That explained the MCU van.
We caught up with Dolores and headed to her house for a little bit so she could change clothes (she had to work) and relax before going to dinner. By this time, Gavin was ready to go home before our food ever came. The restaurant took forever to bring us our food and then I had to send my sandwich back because the menu didn't list it as having mayonnaise and I don't do mayo.
Gavin didn't sleep at all on the way home and the fought going to bed some, despite the fact that it was 11 p.m. He did sleep in, waking up an hour later than normal at 8:30. Mom decided she wanted to get me a hanging plant so I could have some color to look at when I look out my kitchen window so we headed to Wal-Mart. She also got a pedometer for herself and paid for a My Little Pony for me to give Riley at her birthday party this Saturday. After lunch, we came back to the house, packed up the rest of her things and she headed out.
Gavin and I headed out a little later because I needed to mail another book off and I wanted to let him play at the park, hoping he would take a nap. We stayed and hour and came home. He never went to sleep. About 6:30, he asked to go out to play again, so we headed back out. He played for about an hour and we were the last ones to leave. Once we got home, I changed him into his pajamas, gave him a cup and proceeded to put him to bed. It looks like he's staying there too. I'm hoping he sleeps the whole night because I'm tired and could really use the sleep.
