The
Chronica was compiled and printed by
Christian Egenolffen, first important printer and publisher in Frankfurt-am-Main, in the year "1535".
Chronica / Desription and common indication coming from all the world, names of lands, estates, properties, histories, essence, manners, customs ... from the most credible history ...described according to historical truth
...described according to historical truth. well, well, well
History is fantasy. I do not know how much fantasy was built in at the time, when this book was written. Maybe "1535", maybe later and back-dated, who knows? But nonetheless it is interesting to read what the view on HIStory was anno M D XXXV, especially when today's dates of historical events and the lifetimes of people are no longer the same. Not even speak about their "glorious deeds" ;-)
Just have a quick look now at the dates of Prophet Mahomet. Nowadays he was born 36 years earlier in 570, but they're no longer sure if it was on 21.4 or 26.4.
Wiki-Muhammad .
Chronica 1535: Born 24 April 606, died in his 63rd year on Monday the 12th day of the first month Rabeg, thus 669
Back then they knew, Mahomet was born 24.4.606, when
Bonifatius IV was pope and Phoce was Roman Emperor.
Chronica 1535: Bonifatius IV was Pope on 24.4.606
Somehow nowadays Bonifatius IV started his job as Pope merely on 25.9.608.
After Emperor Phoce,
Heraclius became Emperor in 613 and reigned for 30 years (-643), let's see the contemporary dates: 610-641
Chronica 1535: Heraclius became Emperor in 613, 30 year reign.
I guess in "1535" they had not yet forg...,found the Solidus of Emperor Heraclius, struck 610-613.[rofl]
Now, for the old text about the birth, life and death of Mahometi [& his "glorious deeds"]: Screenshots are followed by the english google translation. The olde german transcript can be found at the end, google translator could luckily cope with most of it. Have fun!
On the birth, life and death of Mahometi
At the time of Pope Boniface IV and Phoce as emperor in the year six hundred and six on the twenty-fourth of April (the Turks celebrate Mahometi's birthday with great reverence and seven days in a row) the lost child Mahometi was born to an Arab man, Abdimenesch, a heathen or Saracen, and to a mother of the same tribe and faith. Soon an orphan, deprived of both his parents, he was raised in Arabia in the city of Saligna by his father's brother.
When he grew older, he served a rich noble widow named Cadegan, and plied her trade as a merchant of goods on donkeys and camels in Siriam and elsewhere. And he served her so well that he was able to make her his wife and got all her land and property. For before he came to her, as a quick and cunning merchant, he had a lot to do with Christians and Jews, and learned from both of them (including the fact that he could read himself and had learned something) their faith, so that he could speak a lot of nonsense of both testaments, and the sayings and laws were full and ready. Then he came to and behind this widow, who considered him special and worthy of her honor and property.
Now around the end of the Emperor Heraclius, who began to rule after Phoca and ruled from six hundred and thirteen for thirty years, all historians say that this sect began and has grown so much in land and people that there is no greater widespread faith in the world today. But the cause of this sect, which helped Mohammed to his feet and made the people happy, is the great tyranny of Emperor Heracles, who, after he had prevailed and fought the Persians, burdened and oppressed the same Persians, Arabs and Calders, with great greed, arrogance and tributes, so that they quickly thought about being freed from his yoke again and began to be somewhat rebellious towards the Emperor's officials, who burdened them with daily assessments, but because of force they were not allowed to express their will publicly.
Then the bold and cunning child Mahomet came to them, knowing full well where they were and where the shoe pinches.
When he found them willing to make war against the Roman Emperor, he hoped that a door would be open to his advancement and incited them more and more to bring them freedom
and to free them from such oppression. So they soon made him a lord and captain, soon started a revolt, drove out and killed the Emperor's officers, and with Mahomet they waged war against the Roman Empire.
When Mahomet realized this good fortune and success, and also the people's foolishness (who had been blinded by him), he said that he had been sent to them by the great God to defeat them and reveal his will, calling himself a prophet and messenger of God.
For this purpose he brought along two very learned companions, a Jew and a Christian, whom he used as instruments for his own purposes. Sergius, a runaway and apostate monk and heretic, or as other historians say, an archdeacon in Antioch, advised him to renounce idolatry so that the cause would appear clearer and he would confess only one true God, according to the ability of the creator, and persuaded him to become a Nestocian Christian. Then the Jews sent two extremely learned Jews to him to instruct him in the Old Testament, so that his law and sect would be mixed in the Ebionian way from both Testaments. Thus Mahomet makes and preserves his Alcoran as the Pope makes the decree from both Testaments, and protected his poison with the honey of truth, standing and breaking down the Scriptures piece by piece, whatever serves him, wherever it is pleasant or acceptable. In order that he may be considered a keeper and fulfiller of both Testaments, he calls himself a prophet because of the Old Testament, and an apostle, that is, an ambassador of God, because of the New, between whom he is to be a mediator and arbitrator, recognized and sent by God for this purpose. Therefore he circumcises and baptizes his own people, a commandment which is enshrined in his Alcoran. When his book of laws, which he called Alcoran, was written and finished, he came with this certificate and two companions, armed with the most knowledgeable of the people, claiming that he was a messenger and prophet of God, sent to their salvation, especially so that he, at God's command, should somewhat soften and temper the overly heavy laws of the Jews and Christians, because God had seen and experienced that they were too heavy, and therefore had annulled the old ones through Christ.
But now that Christ's yoke was too heavy, God wanted to try the last thing and announce to the whole world through him an eternally lasting law. And so that the people would receive this holy law with more devotion, he promised, like Moses, to fulfill it with miraculous signs, and set a day on which they should prepare themselves to receive the law of God with miraculous signs.
When the people gathered and Mahomet stepped onto the square in front of the whole crowd, a dove that had been secretly brought flew onto Mahomet's shoulders (as we also read from Thomas Aquinas) and ate a bite from his ears, thereby deceiving the people into thinking that the Holy Spirit was speaking to him in the form of a dove. Then he brought a goat to eat food from Mahomet's hand, which then ran hungry to Mahomet in front of the whole crowd, and brought a book (which he had written and tied between the goat's ears) between his ears, which Mahomet opened and read to the people with great astonishment as if it had been sent by God.
He also had the ground dug up at the same end, all prepared, and buried gold and silver jars full of milk and honey in it, so that the people could be persuaded that this was a sign and revelation of future abundance, abundance, freedom, pleasure, wealth, and the promised land if they kept his law. In order to make them believe in the eyes of the whole people that they had taken his law into their own name with great fear and obedience, and had sworn an oath that it had come to them from God. They therefore went out with him happily to fight against Emperor Heraclius
and against all those who were opposed to their faith, for in their Alcoran and others it had been decreed that they should expand and enforce their faith with the sword.
Now of these false miracles he writes in his Aloran: O miracles, O signs that may well be compared to the retreat of the Red Sea, and the sun standing still outside the territory of Joshua, and the commandment of Christ commanding the dead.
At last he was tormented with the falling disease [epilepsie], which greatly angered his wives and some of the people. To take away this suspicion from him, he said, as often as he had spoken with the angel Gabriel, he, as a deadly man, could not endure the brightness of his splendor, and therefore fell into such a trance.
When this sect had victory on all sides and a successful outcome, and had also been freed from the tyranny of Heracles, the Roman Emperor, he also showed them an easy law, a sweet yoke and a wide road and advance, happiness, joy and salvation on earth, and a paradise full of pleasure after this life. Therefore many people and lands fell to this sect in the hope of gaining happiness and freedom, especially all the people around Mount Caucasus, called Nabothei, who later on harassed and conquered as far as Africa and Hispania, and overcame by force whatever did not want.
Thus did Homarus Mahometi trouble the boys and descendants of Damascus, the whole land of Siriam, Pheniciam, Hierusalem, Antioch, and whatever he could. In the year 641 he killed all the monks in the monasteries, killed many Christians, strangled many, made many rebels and turned them into mamluks.
Now the Saracens continue to draw upon Mahomet many sayings which refer to Christ and the Holy Spirit, such as Deuteronomy xviii. I will quicken him with a prophet among them, whom they shall hear as myself, although Mahomet is not of the Jews, but was born of the Ishmali race, as they themselves confess. Because of his apostolate they draw upon the New Testament what is said about the Holy Spirit, as John the fourteenth. The Comforter of the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, yes, will inspire you and remind you of everything that I have said to you. Yet Mahomet is an antichrist who contradicts and does not allow any killing of the flesh or lust, but only all pleasure, and teaches nothing less than that of Christ, which is why this cannot be applied to him and the Scripture cannot take place or be fulfilled in him. Likewise the saying of Luke xxi. I will give you mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries cannot resist, the Saracens also apply to their Mahomet, even though he resisted his enemies only with force and not with mouth and wisdom.
He fulfilled his apostolic office throughout his life as if he were an apostle, since his followers, out of God's wrath and just condemnation, were so blinded and enchanted from him that he could never do anything wrong. One can excuse and sanctify everything, his tyranny must be and be called a zeal of God, as happens and must happen when a man makes an idol out of a human being and deviates from the love of the truth to the fables of men, to serve them and believe what the pope wants to believe (every sect and heresy has one, for whose sake they believe everything), then God must close our eyes, settle them with lies, and send powerful errors, and confirm with miraculous signs that we have no have eyes/ears/or sense anymore.
So it goes with Mahomet too, when he acts with violence against everyone and causes trouble, the offenders take their place, and highwaymen, fugitives, bloodthirsty scoundrels hang themselves for this purpose to rob and kill, then there must be a punishment and
God's zeal to expand his law, and when he took by force what he found from the heathens and unbelievers, that meant that they had to recover and take back from the unbelievers as from the unjust owners, because as the people of God they valued the whole earth and everything belonging to them. In short, whatever he needed, he took as his own, and the innocent example of Christ had to help him in this, who also sent for the donkey without being asked, had no other reason for it than the Lord needed it, and therefore required it.
Item one reads of this deceiver and devil's apostle Mahomet, when he was once riding across the field on a mule, and a good woman who had come to meet him did not want to consent to his will, he unashamedly attacked his donkey in front of all his companions and told his companions to excuse himself by saying that the woman had sinned more by this disobedience than if she had killed a hundred people, if he had led her out of God's prayer and led her to become pregnant with a prophet of God. For this reason, even today, on a certain day of the year, all Saracen women mourn and commit this sin and disobedience of the women mentioned above, who thus prevented a prophet of God, and wherefore some of them have considered it good to persuade their women and willingly allow them to do this work.
That is the unjustified thing, and he has persuaded his people that vanity is sacred, like other follies.
He died the same way as he was living, extinguished with poison, on a Monday, the twelfth day of the first month of Rabeg, in the sixty-third year of his age and the twenty-third year of his kingdom and prophecy, when he had been lying senseless for fourteen days before his death, and his whole body was swollen. While he was alive he commanded that no one should bury him for three days, for he would then rise and be taken up to heaven. When they waited - not three days, but twelve - and found nothing other than that he stank more the longer he laid down, he was finally buried in the earth with displeasure.
When everyone found himself deceived and learned of his deceit, that everything he had said was vain and false, everyone reverted to the faith and sect he had held and apostatized out of necessity, with the exception of a few of his friends who thought they would inherit the kingdom as descendants. Soon Ebubeer, later called Calipha, one of his friends and disciples, became king in Mohammed's place, and, out of great disfavor, he reverted all those who had deserted Mohammed and returned to the rule of Mohammed. Then the agile warrior believed again as the king wanted, partly out of fear of power, love of advantage, hope of honor and wealth.
I wonder .... What is today with this tradition where Saracen women yearly mourned this "sin and disobedience of that woman", at least for almost 900 years, around 640 to 1535 .. is it still happening today? Or been forgotten sometime after 1535?
Also do the "Turks" or rather now the Moslems still celebrate the birth of their prophet Mahomet for 7 days in a row? Another forgotten tradition?
