God of small packets

Feb 14, 2016 14:16

Our online cyber presence is continuously subjected to whims of God of small packets AKA the internet of pings (and pongs). Alike numerous deities that ours and greek mythology has, Indians have plenty of ISPs around. You can surrender to will of any and yet be assured that your desire for best connectivity shall remains myth forever. I have changed my internet religion a few times and here's the rating/ranking so far

Speed wise:
1) Vodafone 3G
2) Reliance CDMA
3) MTNL broadband

Price wise
1) MTNL Broadband (post free pack, u get speed of 1 Mbps) at 852 per month
2) Reliance CDMA (post free pack, u still get speed of 143 kbps) at 980 per month
3) Vodafone 3G (post gree pack, don't you dare try use internet. It will suck life out of you at 64kbps)

Reliability wise
1) Reliance CDMA (except for dongle problem that surfaced after 4 years of use, never faced any consistency problem with Reliance)
2) Vodafone 3G (Would have rated it above Reliance but then realized that their billing system is highly flawed. Even if you don't use internet that widely and wildly, they will shamelessly send you a mail in 15 days that your free pack is over)
3) MTNL network is madly loaded and are cash stripped in improving infra. So, if everyone decides to latch on to it (weekends specially), your line will start disconnecting so frequently that you can forget any meaningful conversations with friends over chat. Half messages sent by you will be lost and to find out what they wrote to you while you were suddenly offline, you have to keep crosschecking with chat logs. Reliability is big big question mark here.

Customer care
1) MTNL Broadband (this is big surprise for me as well. Very simple and noble set of people who attend the call and try to solve it for you ASAP)
2) Vodafone/Reliance (It's toughest to deal with customer care of either. Disconnecting is almost impossible and vodafone especially sucks in issuing wrong bill and then claim that as good will they are reducing amount. V folks, first you rob Indian Govt of tax money and then you claim good will gestures towards us...)

What about Yes, Tikona etc? Tikona kinda duped a colleague taking 3 months of money with connectivity going down in next day itself. Private ISPs seem to have knack to take you for ride and you can be at their whims entirely because indian consumer court/helpline sucks big time. I had lodged complaint on National Consumer helpline which was never attended by anyone for even 6 months. It still is lying in their with no one looking at it. I ended up paying from my pocket for a repair which should have been covered under warranty. But yeah, these corporates will send you legal notices if you default on your bill payments. Long live the "Consumer is king" facade :P
