Lappy gatha continues... towards conclusion.

SuSe denied 3D acceleration on that ATI RS200 4337 (IGP 345) onboard thingy. Googlizing this issue lead to a suggestion to install X.org 6.8 on that lappy. Before downloading the XOrg source code, I did a run of online update which ended up screwing XServer completely. Even then I downloaded 55 MB worth archive. Read documentation. Compiled that inflated 305 MB source code for 2 hours and installed it only to realize that XServer is still screwed. With not so heavy heart, I leave for home with SuSe DVD and Ubuntu CD. You can guess what happened next. Being a true MS Windows follower, I ventured for reinstallation. One serious reason for this escapist approach was for that I found installing XFCE + several other window managers had screwed up Ubuntu installation also. So now Ubuntu too denied 3D acceleration. And then I wanted to try out JFS and sharing /home between Ubuntu and SuSe. I guess both desires could have been fulfilled by
1. Comment entries of /home from fstab of both distros
2. Make home directory in / partition (optional step)
3. Delete /home partition of both distros
4. Create single /home partition and format it in JFS format
5. Make entry in fstab of both distros to refer to this /home

You may treat the steps mentioned above as hypothesis. I haven't tried them out and rather took the other path of reinstallation. Now swap and /home both are shared between the two distros. /home is worth apprx 8 GB. Ubuntu is back to normal. Am able to play tuxracer and GLmatrix screensaver both. SuSe hasn't improved. May be I will install (+upgrade) Xorg (6.8.2) and Gnome (2.12) again in SuSe without touching the kernel (suggestions?). Plus there are some other suggestions prescribed on SuSe forum I may try prior to this compilation activity of XOrg. Forget it. I guess there will be no volume 3. In worst case I might end up ignoring/replacing (with FreeBSD) SuSe.

Reusing that /home partition is what is under my observation now. '.bash_history' replays commands across the distros. There is '.openoffice' directory with certain configurations done under Ubuntu. I am waiting to see how SuSe's open office reacts to it since SuSe's OO is comparatively old one. I could have made the user profile 'peeyush' in both distros to point to separate directory. But then it will be no fun. The game is on.
