i starting making tiramisu a few weeks ago for a few reasons:
1) i wanted to be adventurous and stop making only 'safe' and 'easy' stuff like muffins, brownies and cookies, or even apple crumble.
2) had promised yweeern a surprise after he completed his reservist, knowing how he dreaded it cos it was high key and he had to be outfield for 4 days.
3) my tuition kid's mom had made it before and gave me one cup. it was yum, and yweeern really liked it too. so i could just easily get the recipe from her.
must say the first time i made it, it was so-so, pretty decent for a first time. followed the recipe to a T, but the texture of the cheese part came out a bit too un-smooth/un-creamy. yweeern appreciated my effort though, his mom liked it, and my beloved sister loved it, so i was quite heartened.
which made me try the second time, but second time was a fail :( but it was good i failed too, because i learnt quite a bit of stuff. I tried paul's recipe the second time round - it was much simpler and so much quicker to make! i was using the cheese from the same tub as the first time (and i had stupidly frozen the cheese before making it the first time), but this time i didn't 'heat' up the cheese to room temperature, and just put it in the electric mixer. the cheese 'curdled' - it became super lumpy and gross, looked like egg mayo which someone puked out haha. threw the whole mixture away.
but knowing what was wrong and determined to get the texture right, i tried again just before hols ended. used paul's recipe again (love it, it has only 2 steps), and this time just got the mascarpone cheese from ntuc (previously got it from phoon huat). but this time it was REALLY SUCCESSFUL! thank God (: huiyi and huiqi helped me also so big thanks to them too (: here's what it looked like at the end:
yweeern loves it, so i'm pleased (: daddy really loves it too, so does beloved sister witty (: (: but because mascarpone cheese is so expensive, i may just try substituting the cheese part with tofu+white chocolate the next time i do this again. saw someone doing it on tv, and apparently it tastes quite good! (though definitely not the same as authentic tiramisu.) but shall have to see how, cos it involves using a blender and my blender is not functioning very well.
