big night

Opening night went VERY, well, especially since I tossed and turned the night before, getting a grand total of three hours of sleep. The show grew by leaps and bounds between Wednesday and Friday. Thursday's preview had a few minor glitches, nothing too noticeable, and we had about 15 people.

Friday was packed (friends, family, etc.) And the food at the party was great afterwards. The director complimented me so much I was worried my eyes would start watering. :oD Plenty of other people complimented me too. Some made favorable comparisons with the guy I replaced, which made me a little uncomfortable, as I think he's a good guy (and it's not really relevant anyway). I don't think I have the motivation to be a GREAT actor (too much effort, and I have a director's brain when the chips are down), but I've decided I would like to continue acting occasionally, in between directing projects and periods of "me time."

Oh, and during Act II, we heard sirens and helicopters very close by. The cast thought nothing of it, and the audience thought it was part of the sound design. Evidently there was some sort of carjacking that turned into a high-speed chase. This one car plowed into the side of another (both are royally totaled), and came up onto the corner of the building we were performing in.

On fire.

In the middle of the brand new landscaping that was put in as part of the building's restoration.

We didn't notice until after the show, when the fire was already put out. But the car was TWO FEET FROM THE FRONT ENTRANCE. Any more force, and it might have crashed through those doors and landed at the bottom of the basement steps.

Everyone was ok, they caught three guys, and there may or may not be a fourth who escaped. I think it would have been hilarious if he had broken in and come up onstage. Or a cop. It would have been pretty easy to work that into the show, as Act II is pretty wild.

*sigh* The joys of performing in West Philly. Well, I'm off to distribute more postcards for the show! Wish me luck on my first double-show day (4:00pm AND 8:00pm).

P.S. "Friends and Family" tix are evidently $10 for any show. And they're doing Philly FunSaver 1/2 price tix through next Thursday.
