I think when it comes to this election, as important as selecting a presidential candidate is, so is spending a lot of time focusing on our state's propositions. I've been trying really, really hard to fully read and understand each one in time for November 4 ( Read more... )

Of course I'm voting No, because I'm not a bigot. What reasons have you heard in favor of Prop 8? My dad is for Prop 8, but that's because he thinks homosexuals are from Mars. I'm all for carefully researching everything I attach my vote to, but to me this is quite possibly the most clear cut black and white issue I've ever seen on a ballot.

also - just wanted to add that I totally agree with you that more people should be talking about the state propositions. As crappy as it sounds, our presidential vote doesn't really matter. We live in California - our state's so blue that it doesn't really matter who we vote for, our electors are voting for Obama anyways. The stuff our vote does matter for are the various propositions, and a lot of those can actually impact us pretty significantly.

Mostly what I've heard is that people are worried that keeping homosexual marriage legal will cheapen the definition of marriage. That's why you usually hear people, not even necessarily religious people, rambling on about if you're going to let two people of the same sex get married, why not just let a person marry their dog or a tree? Its completely irrational and I wouldn't say that those people voting for Prop 8 are all bigoted since some of them wouldn't mind extending benefits to a person's same sex significant other as if the people were married, they just don't want to give them the "privilige" of the title of marriage.

But then those same peope are probably the same ones getting married and divorced about twelve times so who's cheapening what? Marriage is over-rated anyway.

I've also been thinking a lot about this particular proposition. Like you said, it really does come down to religion and what you think the definition of "marriage" is. Based on religion, yes I do think that marriage was made for two people of the opposite sex, but I also don't believe it's any place of the government to be able to force that. It all comes down to people not wanting to condone "sin", and while some sins like murder do need laws, marriage, no matter who it's between, isn't hurting anyone. I don't know, I just don't think it makes sense for a government to have a say in this particular matter.
