I’ve got this pipe dream of selling MythTV setups to people with some cash to burn, and of course I’m always trying to come up with better ways to do things. I thought about utilizing a USB plugin device for Windows/Mac machines. Since there are now USB TV Tuners I know the video can be pushed over USB which is making me think a device like this may exist.
so at minimum I need a device with:
USB Video out
Sound with sound out, preferably via USB but an 1/8th“ jack will suffice
Can be controlled by USB in, like a VNC session.
Ethernet
boots via tftp
It would be nice to also have:
An Ethernet hub/switch
RCA/S-Video, HDMI outputs.
DVI Out
Essentially I want a slave computer on USB.
I’m sure I can find plenty of cool disk-less appliances out there, the USB controlled bit becomes doubtful. I want ”simple“, very simple to where any monkey can hook it up. It will of course have to have enough processing power to play back XVid encoded video with the back-end running. What I’m going for here is a three wire hookup. PC to box USB, Ethernet, Power. The request of an extra Ethernet hub/port was so we could daisy chain without running an extra cable. The TV compatible hookups is incase I dedide I want a one device for multiple types of interfaces. The TV part I have handled with XBoxes and custom computers anyways so it’s not vital. I want something Mac and Windows users can use to view it on their own systems with. I’m pretty sure I can come up with a software way of doing it. Seems to me like there is a free hardware emulator out there somewhere (think VMWare) that I could probably accomplish the same thing with.
