On American Idol and Amanda Overmyer.
First of all, I don't really watch American Idol, however there's at least one TV in every room in the MCC and I worked the evening shift up until very recently - I'm temporarily on another, so there wasn't much avoiding it. Generally I tune most of what's on there out, especially when it's low IQ dredge like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, or anything "reality" based. What an Oxymoron, reality TV, I would say it has less basis in reality than some cartoons and SciFi.
I've made no secret however that Amanda Overmyer caught my attention. An item on Fark brought my attention back to American Idol, so I decided to see how Amanda was doing. Using Google the Great I found that she was voted off March 19th. Setting aside the fact this only proves that the people who watch shows like this and vote on them have no taste, I'm somewhat glad she didn't win this no talent fit the mold short lived star machine. She is outside of that mold and is better suited to start as a real musician. American Idol put her on stage and gave her some attention, nows the time to get a new classic rock artist.
I'm making this post not so much to talk to my friends but in the hope maybe the search engines will pick up on it and eventually give some encouragement back to Amanda, don't let a defeat on American Idol discourage you, go be a real musician. Play the local bars, record an album, stay a nurse in your day job - it's a good reputable thing to be. A couple of covers are alright, but you really need to get your own stuff going to succeed. If I can help I will, I have not musical talent, but I can write some lyrics if you can write music, and I have a bad assed sound blaster card that isn't exactly top of the line pro equipment, but I could get a decent sounding album out of it as recording equipment. I have a couple of buddies who play guitar, and if we need a drummer we'll just order a pizza and ask the delivery guy.
So life goes on. Dave outs himself for thinking an American Idol contestant was great, his friends get to make fun of him for this, Amanda probably never reads this, and I get to go on being a tech. I still wont watch American Idol beyond it being on at work and me mostly tuning it out.
