Yup, another excerpt...

Nov 26, 2007 08:22

Alrighty, I figured I'd go ahead and post another excerpt for y'all in case anyone would like to read what I'm writing. Again, remember it has not been edited so there could be typos and it could make no sense and it could be all around crap! LOL Take yesterday for instance...wrote an entire paragraph, finished it and said 'oh my god that is crap' to myself but did I go back and fix it? Nope. Why not you ask? Well, it's because my NaNo ML has my inner editor locked up in an envelope and I am not allowed to see said inner editor until December first! *grins* Fantastic idea they had. YAY for my MLs!! Hooray!!

Okay, here we go...

Rory sat with her little sister a while at the diner before heading home. Luke received a phone call and from the instant he said hello began acting strange. He went back into the kitchen to talk and when he hung up the phone, he had this bizarre look on his face. He walked over to where the two were sitting and simply stood there staring.
“Luke? Everything okay?” Rory questioned, not knowing if she would get an honest answer as strange as he was acting.
He stared at her as if she had two heads and finally answered. “Yes, fine. Everything is fine.” He looked at Emma and said “pack your stuff and we'll head on over to the Inn.”
He went back to the kitchen Rory assumed to tell Caesar they were leaving and to watch the diner. When he returned to the table she had to ask again since she was not convinced at all he was okay. “Luke, are you sure everything is okay?”
“Yeah. Fine. Okay, let's go.” He grabbed the backpack and looked at Rory. “Need help with anything?”
“No, I've got it.”
“You can ride over with us. Oh, or do you have your car here?”
“No. I walked here.” Rory paused a moment, wondering if she should push it and decided since she was her mother's daughter, she must push the point. “Remember a little while ago you asked repeatedly if I was okay and if everything was fine? I kept saying it was however you knew that was a lie because you have known me most of my life and you know exactly when I am lying. Luke, I've known you just as long and although I was a child a good chunk of that time, I'm observant enough to realize your little quirks and I too know exactly when you're lying...or hiding something.” She stopped a moment in an attempt to read his face and realized it was pointless. He was not giving in just yet. “Fine. Just remember I know you're lying Luke...and I am here if you want to share.”
The three left the diner looking like a part of the perfect family, missing nothing but the mother. As they pulled up in front of the Dragonfly, Rory felt butterflies in her stomach, knowing her mother would have a million questions she simply could not answer today...if even tomorrow or the next day. Any time in the future really seemed close to impossible for Rory. Luke shut the truck off, he and Emma got out and walked toward the door. Luke stopped, said something to Emma before she walked through the door and turned back toward Rory. “Rory? Aren't you coming inside?”
“Yeah, I'm coming. It is just strange to be here after all this time. I hadn't realized just how long it has been until I saw the old place. No, don't tell Mom I called it the old place or she'll go nuts redecorating again!”
He laughed. “I wouldn't dream of it. Come on.” He waited for Rory, to let her walk in first.
She got out of the truck slowly, shut the door, took a deep breath and walked over to Luke standing beside him a moment. She took another deep breath and opened the door to the Dragonfly Inn...her mother's pride and joy next to her daughters and husband.
“Rory!” Lorelai runs around Michel to get to her daughter the instant she walks through the door and lets it close behind her. “My prodigal daughter has returned. Have you come for your inheritance? No wait, that's wrong. You've spent all of your inheritance and you've come home to beg for mercy...no forgiveness.”
Rory gives her mother a puzzled look once she lets go of her, turns to Luke and says “huh?”
He shakes his head. “New church in town, stained glass windows she became obsessed with, pretty curtains, and something about free coffee in Sunday School.”
“Oh whoopie. It's flannel shirt, original offspring and the other offspring I adore so much that also seems to ramble incessantly day after day after day.” Michel grumbled as he continued making notes in the guest book.
“Hi Michel. You're looking smashing today today...awfully cheerful as well!” Emma said with a smile.
Luke turned to his daughter. “Stop, if you're not nice to him you won't be able to stay here with your mother and sister.”
“I know Dad. It's just so much fun...”
“Stop right there before you say something I'll end up regretting.”
“Okay flannel shirt,” Emma said with a giggle.
He tried his best to give her a stern look but every time he tried, Luke simply melted into a puddle of goo as Lorelai likes to put it. “Goodbye other offspring.” Luke grabbed his wife's hand as he spoke. “I've got to borrow your mom a minute” leading her back the hallway.
“Oooh, seven minutes in heaven in the closet?” Her face lit up like a giddy teenager about to get in trouble with the bad boy in school that she never realized liked her.
“All those Sunday's in church and you still don't learn.” They faced one another.
“Coffee. All about the coffee. It is always all about the coffee.” She gave him a kiss and adjusted the ball cap he refuses to stop wearing even though it is beginning to fall apart.
“Anyway.”
“Yes. Now, something is wrong because why else would you leave the diner in the middle of the day and drive both girls here to be completely under my influence and unending mugs of coffee? So...share.” She held both of his hands while he began fumbling over his words.
“I got a call. Jess, it was Jess and Rory was right there of course. He can't put it together...the crib. He helped me with ours of course so he wants me to help him since the baby is outgrowing the bassinet.” He shook his head. “I wish Rory would listen when we try to tell her about Jess and his life now. She may not want to know but after what just happened to her, she really needs to know before she finds out some other way...some heartbreaking, painful way. Although there will be pain no matter what. And if I don't leave soon he will show up here looking for me because like an idiot I told Caesar where I was going. Another reason why I brought Rory here because I knew that man would tell her not realizing she wouldn't already know.”
“Whoa, breathe Luke.” She tried to calm him down.
He takes a deep breath and releases it slowly. “Breathing.”
“What do you mean 'after what happened'?” Lorelai questioned.
“All that and the one thing you grasp is after what happened?” He knew he would never completely understand his wife or how her mind works.
“Yes. Sounds like it is something major and something I should know...something I should find out immediately.” She waited for his response to her question knowing full well he would not answer.
“No. Rory will tell you everything I'm sure. More than she told me. Lorelai, I really have to go.” He gave his wife a kiss and as he walked to the door, said goodbye to Emma and Rory. Emma responded with “bye Daddy” while a glare was all he received from Rory.

Alrighty, there ya go! LOL I had to stop there because the next part is a conversation with Lorelai so I couldn't cut any of that off at all. *waves* I'm off now...must write!

Peace, Love, and Giggles,
Deanna
