I know you are probably sitting at your computers thinking, "Let's pretend fandom is an all-inclusive place where we actually constantly talk about ladies and POC as if they are the bestest ever. Let's vote through a bunch of minor female characters nobody has ever heard of because it will make us feel better!" Well, to that I call bullshit.
FMM is not about pretending we are all better social justice warriors than we are, it's about a Deathmatch of favorites. Maybe three people's favorite SPN character is Jo Harvelle, but definitely not all of fandom. How do I know this? Because Dean has over 41,000 fics on AO3 and according to my brief search Jo seems to mainly appear as a supporting character in Dean's stories (and only has 2,600 stories about her period). Fandom is not a predominantly feminist or inclusive place, otherwise Sterek would never exist or be as popular as it is at the expense of both female and POC characters. Because the only reason people seem to be into them is that they are two white dudes who shared a scene together once. Do we really want to pretend otherwise during FMM?
Look at it this way, imagine you are running the real March Madness tournament. You know the one with basketball and stuff. If you were the tournament director would you allow a bunch of fourth grade basketball teams into the competition over Duke just because it would make you feel better as a person for a little while. Absolutely not. You'd want Duke. You'd want to see if some tinier school could take down Duke. That's certainly more inspiring than seeing a tinier school take down a bunch of fourth-graders.
Plus, if you are a fan of tinier schools isn't it more gratifying when they take down a Duke as opposed to a team of fourth graders? You don't want to the be the team that fluked their way to a win because they faced nobody challenging whatsoever. Underdog stories work because their are threatening Goliaths blocking the door, and in the name of making us feel more socially aware than we truly are, we are blocking those Goliaths from the door and this true magic can't happen!
Let's not turn FMM into a joke where it's all underdogs against characters you never heard of. Let us let the douchebag behemoths reign!!
