My Card. "DADDY!"
The toddler's scream jerked Rhys out of his sleep and he bolted upright in bed. He looked over at Eden, who was also beginning to sit up.
"It's Quinn," she said as she tossed back the blankets. He stopped her.
"I got this," he said. "I know you have to be on set early tomorrow. Go back to sleep."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm fine, Ede. I can handle a crying three year old, no problem."
"Okay..."
He waved his hand and was going to say more when Quinn screamed even louder. "DAAAADYYYYY!!"
For a moment, Rhys thought his son's screams were going to wake up his mother-in-law (which was the last thing he needed), but he reminded himself that they were in Three Lakes, and Mary was back in Pleasantview. It didn't stop him from hurrying up the stairs, however. He had a feeling that Erin was going to join in with her brother's screams.
He turned on the light in the upstairs hallway and he opened up the the twin's bedroom door. He was able to take everything in in a glance as soon as the light from the hall poured in. Erin was sitting calmly in her tiny bed, though her eyes were open wide. Quinn had pressed himself against the wall that his tiny bed was against, his blanket pulled over his head.
"Month'ters," his daughter lisped solemnly as he stepped into the room. He gently brushed the tousled red curls off her forehead.
"Are you wet? Do you need to go potty?"
"No."
"Okay," he said and he kissed her forehead. "Go back to sleep. I'll take care of the monsters."
"'kay," she replied sleepily. She flopped back down onto her bed and rolled onto her side.
Rhys smiled slightly and turned towards Quinn. He gently pulled the blanket off of his son's head. As soon as he did, Quinn thew the blanket to the side and scrambled towards Rhys, his arms outstretched. When Rhys picked him up, Quinn buried his hot, teary face in his father's neck. Rhys could feel the small boy tremble.
"What's wrong, little guy?"
"M'sters," the toddler whimpered as he pointed at the closet. At that moment, a tree branch brushed up against the window, causing Quinn to bury his face again and tremble even more.
Rhys rocked his son and stroked his back. At that moment he remembered what had been nagging at him all night: he forgot to bring a night light for the bedroom. He could hardly blame the kids for being scared. It was an unfamiliar environment. There were more trees in Three Lakes and they were closer to the house. It was also a lot darker. A wave of guilt rushed over him. It was his fault that his son was terrified.
He stroked Quinn's hair. "I'm here now. There are no more monsters for you to be scared of." Quinn's arms tightened around Rhys' neck as Rhys walked to the closet and opened the door. He turned on the light. "See? No monsters."
Quinn hesitantly lifted his head up and looked inside the closet. He turned and looked at Rhys with his mother's wide blue eyes.
"They come back?"
Rhys shook his head. "No, they won't come back. You want me to stay here and stand guard?" Quinn nodded his head vigorously. Rhys kissed his forehead. "Okay, I will." He felt at the bottom of Quinn's diaper. He gently asked, "Do you need a diaper change?" The twins were mostly potty trained, but they still wore diapers to bed in case they had an accident.
Quinn darted his eyes away and looked ashamed. Rhys patted his back and said, "It's okay, bubs. We all have accidents. Let's get you changed."
Once he was done with that task, Rhys picked up Quinn's blanket and wrapped his son in it. He then carried the red headed boy to the rocking chair and sat down in it, cradling Quinn in his arms. He slowly began to rock his son to sleep. Quinn stuck his thumb into his mouth and began sucking on it as he turned his eyes towards the closet. Rhys noticed the look and said, "There are no monsters. Your daddy's here to protect you. I promise that I'll never let any monster come near you, okay?"
Quinn nodded, closed his eyes, and snuggled against his father.
A few minutes later, he was fast asleep.
