Ace Attorney WikiPersonality: Pearl Fey is an adorable nine year old girl with the most cheerful smile ever. That being said, she is an average nine year old girl in every way, except for the whole spirit channeling thing, but that’s another story. She doesn’t know much about the world outside of her home Kurain Village due to her mother’s strict rules about not talking to strangers, and has absolutely no idea about certain things that seem mundane to regular people, such as the existence of lawyers. She is also not the best speller or reader around, but despite her lack of education, Pearl is a very sweet and kind individual who is always willing to help out no matter what. Even though her education is lacking, Pearl is said to be a prodigy at spirit channeling, which is repeatedly shown when Pearl effortlessly channels Mia Fey many times throughout the games. In personality, Phoenix Wright mentions that “she not only speaks in a refined manner, but laughs in that way too.” So despite her very young age and her horrible spelling skills, Pearl has been shown to be wise beyond her years, even though she is still a child.
When strangers are around, Pearl acts very emotionless, usually staring at said stranger and running off whenever they attempt to talk to her. But due to her interactions with Maya Fey and Phoenix Wright, she’s begun to warm up to more people instead of just running away at first meeting. Viewing Maya Fey as her older sister and idol, Pearl strives to be just like Maya, almost to the point of hero worship. After meeting Phoenix Wright, Pearl believes that Maya and Phoenix are meant to be and will violently oppose anyone who she thinks gets in the way of that, including “Mr. Nick” himself, since she’s been shown to be able to slap him into unconsciousness when Pearl believed that he has “wronged Mystic Maya” (ex: staring too long at Iris or any other girls). The reason that she believes that Phoenix and Maya have a romantic relationship is that she has grown up around bad marriages, where it seems that every single man in Kurain always leaves. Since Phoenix and Maya are the first pair that Pearl has seen to get along with each other, she still has the childish fantasy that they will have a happily ever after.
In dangerous situations, Pearl seems to panic easily, often breaking down and crying, as shown when Maya was kidnapped. This is most likely due to her mentality as a kid and is a pretty typical response to have in those sorts of situations, so yeah. She will do anything in her power (aka, giving moral support) for the “heroes” in the situation. But when confronted with a secret of her own, Pearl is actually a very bad liar and it doesn’t take that much to make her break, unless it’s a very special circumstance, such as the letter given to her by her mother, in which she was told not to tell anyone of the contents. Seeing as she was extremely devoted to her mother, Pearl kept the letter a secret from everyone and only confessed to having the letter when Phoenix Wright confronted her with the evidence that she tried to burn it.
…All in all, still your average, bright, cheerful, and continually upbeat nine year old girl. With spirit channeling powers.
What your character can offer: Pearl will bring her innate ability to cheer people up by being cute and her awesome ability to slap grown men into unconsciousness. She can also channel spirits very well (said to be a prodigy), but the chip probably prevents that.
What items will they be bringing with them? Pearl’s standard spirit medium training clothes/uniform, her blue Magatama, and somehow her rubber ball has appeared too.
Third-Person Sample:
Pearl still doesn’t get why Mr. Nick and Mystic Maya always act that way when she says that they’re “special someones”. Their faces turn red and they start speaking in a funny way. They are special to each other, aren’t they? So why is it such a big deal whenever she tries to get them together? Is it because she’s always around? Of course, that’s it! All she needs to do is to leave them alone for a longer time, and their love will shine through like a sunbeam through the side room’s window in Kurain Village. Pearl sighs wistfully, imagining Mystic Maya with Mr. Nick. They’re meant to be, she just knows it! They spend so much time together, and he really cares about her, and Mystic Maya talks about Mr. Nick all the time, so that must mean that they’re in love and they’ll get married one day and they won’t ever leave each other.
Not like her mother and father.
Pearl’s never known her father. Mother never talks about him, and the only thing she’s heard from the village elders was that Mother was sad for a long time. She doesn’t like it when she sees anyone sad, much less her own mother. Mystic Maya’s a wonderful person to spend time with and she wouldn’t trade her for anything, but Mother is someone who can’t be replaced either.
Pearl gently takes out the secret letter that her mother left her in that secret place behind the folding screen, unfolding the white piece of paper and reading it over again. It’s strange to not tell anyone about something like this, but her mother said to keep quiet about it, because it’s a surprise for Mystic Maya, and her mother’s always been right. And if it’s for Mystic Maya, it must be a good thing for her! All she has to do is channel a spirit at a temple that spirit mediums train at. Pearl’s never seen this person before, the pretty girl with the bright red hair. Briefly, she wonders how her mother knows this person, but she must be a good person if her mother tells her to channel the girl.
She folds the letter up again, tucking it back into the envelope. Pearl remembers a magazine in the Main Hall, which had a “Special Course” at a temple somewhere and was also where her mother wanted her to channel the spirit. She’ll go show Mystic Maya the magazine, because she knows Mystic Maya always tries her best to be a better spirit medium. That way, Mystic Maya will get better, and she can set up the special surprise too! And Mr. Nick will definitely come, because he would come with his special someone, wouldn’t he? After all, he would do anything for Mystic Maya.
And Pearl knows without a doubt, that she would too.
First-Person Sample:
[There’s the sound of someone crying in the background, but it gradually subsides.]
H-hello, is anyone there? Where is this…? M-Mystic Maya? Mr. Nick? T-This isn’t the Inner Temple… Where did everybody go?
…I’ve been a bad girl. I c-couldn’t even channel the spirit that Mother wanted me to… What am I going to do without my s-spiritual powers?
Additional First-Person Sample: (Just in case you need one of Pearl being her normal cheerful self.)
[“Pearly, are you ready to go?”]
Yes, Mystic Maya!
[“Jeez, why did I agree to come to this thing…”]
Mr. Nick! What did I say about showing weakness in front of Mystic Maya?! I won’t let you back out of it now!
[“Wh-what?!”]
Remember, she’s your…special someone! [The romantic thought quickly makes her blush, and she puts her hands to her face, eyes brightly shining with her ideas of the perfect couple.]
So if you make Mystic Maya cry, I’ll never forgive you! Don’t forget that, okay?
