We attended an outdoor cooking class this morning held at Lake Ouachita State Park. (For those of you not from or living in the Natural State, it is pronounced Wash-A-TA.) The class focused on cooking in dutch ovens. The instructors built fires using charcoal briquettes; however, the cooking could be done using a campfire too. The foods prepared included a chili with cornbread topping, a chicken pot pie topped with bisquick topping, a jalepeno cheese cornbread, a peach cobbler dump cake, and homemade donuts. Everything was very tasty and took most of the morning and into the afternoon to prepare, just because it takes a while to heat up the ovens and get them cookin'. We got to meet some folks from all over, including several native Ohioans who have relocated to either Arkansas or Texas. Even a few people came over from the Shreeveport area. The event we attended could be considered a DOG (Dutch Oven Gathering) and the instructor, Lisa, said that they happen all over the country all of the time. There is an Arkansas Dutch Oven Society, though Lisa said that most of the Dutch Oven activities happen in the northwest corner of the state.
