Cooking Lesson #1

Oh, I keep meaning to update this, but I never find the time with all of the other things I prioritize over this. Anyway, it's only been a couple of days since math camp finished and already I'm waking up at three in the afternoon...that's not a good sign. But in brighter news, I've managed to be somewhat more productive with my time than I was at the beginning of summer. And I'm still doing my DT, which is a big plus because I would be very disappointed in myself if I let that slip.

So, I've kind of made a resolution for myself: I'm not going to waste the rest of my summer playing games and being useless. Instead, I'm going to make use of all my free time by doing things that will be much harder to do once school starts (in just a little more than a month!! O_O). That includes finishing Mere Christianity and (hopefully) The Reason for God--but I am more inclined to read the former--as well as learning how to cook and being more helpful around the house by washing dishes, vacuuming, etc. Hopefully I'll also use this time and the treadmill in my garage to get back in shape.

Speaking of which, today was my first cooking lesson, courtesy of my mother. Menu: pan-fried fish, meatballs and "zeet gwah" (a Chinese melon), ribs...precooked, and scrambled egg with ground pork. It's a lot better than it sounds. :P Basically, I learned that my mom likes to add a lot of flavor to her food, which is admittedly what I like too--I just didn't know that much sauce and seasoning went into it, and that she doesn't really use measuring instruments or timers, which makes it much more difficult for me to learn. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a measurement kind of girl. -_-;; I need numbers and instructions to follow! My mom measures with her eye and her tongue in a trial-and-error process...and of course after so many years of cooking, she doesn't have many errors. But for me, the room for error is QUITE bigger! Good thing she gives me some approximate numbers to go by. We'll just see how dinner turns out when I cook it myself. ;)

Oh, and I also learned how to make this dessert called "dun dahn," which is basically the egg custard filling in egg tarts. So hopefully my roommate, Yen, and I can try making some during the school year! :)

Side note: I'm reading this story called "The Boy Who Talks to God" and it's turning out to be an interesting mix of spiritual messages and romance...although I think that the main character is a bit misguided in her romantic hang-ups, but I have a feeling that she'll be set straight--hopefully. The male hero of the story is quite a character, an admirable one at that.
