Farewell, Nylon

Aug 04, 2007 23:03

It goes without saying that I am a fan of Nylon. Well, I was.
You see, Nylon was kind of a symbol of the type of approach to fashion and culture that I've always appreciated.
I liked the quirky style icons (Jodie Foster from Taxi Driver anyone?) their little essays on our cultures views of certain subjects, be they on mall culture or the viewpoints of womens' hairlength. Their editorials always had a nice charm to it, they didn't have that annoying glossy oooooh we are so much richer then thou(though they are) of vogue. My favorite editorial is still with Lydia Hearst, dressed in the guise of a miss matched 60's new york girl in a dilapidated house (coughediesedgwickcough).Their music tastes I am forever grateful to, since several of my favorite acts I was made aware of in their magazine (yes I am horribly lazy and don't seek out music on it's own)

But..lately it seems they've gone down hill...really down hill..
for a magazine I once thought represented taste, talent, orginality, intellect, a certain wit I dare say..
Well all I can say is their cover girls lately don't seem to live up to those standards. By a long shot...

and with the latest cover girl being Nicole Richie, along with the ramblings of Corey Kennedey in every issue now..

Nylon, I dont wish to hate you. I actually liked your music issue and there were many hidden gems in the Lohan one. Your DIY article with Mike & Chris really inspired me, and I now look to them for much inspiration.

But sadly this is not the case with the Nicole issue. The whole theme is OMG ORIGINAL JEANS OMG ORIGINAL NICOLE, which I am all for(except the last bit) but not for the sake of resembling the video below. And try as little Kennedey prinncess might, she just comes off looking like one of these in training mode, even with the 6 inch heels.

Your DIY article once again is the only thing I've geniuely enjoyed. Im still a bit reserved about a full denim dress, yet it still got me thinking. Yet your little essay on high waisted pant superiority didn't give me anything but amusement at the writer's attempts to bring me over to her high waisted territory. Is she kidding herself with her arguments? Im reading denial in between the lines.
This is not an end to my purchase of Nylon. However it is an end to you being first priority at the end of the month. Since my discovery of the bi-monthly Preen and Britian's I-D magazine (I am a bit slow, forgive me), my standards have risen exponentially and you quite frankly aren't meeting them.
Waiting every two months and shelling out 5 bucks is worth it for the lush, inspiring and intelligent(and still using models for the cover!)Preen. I-D interchanges between the two but regardless never takes itself (too)seriously or it's subject matter. It does this well enough to make me quite content on the $10 price tag or odd smell.

In other words, Nylon get your act together. I know you have it in you. You've jumped on the media whore bandwagon and when it eventually collapses, where will you be?
