"Energy, we're gonna be stretching you out." Or not.

I just had a conversation with a friend who insists that a lot of people didn't see peak oil coming, particularly the rural working class of North America who are stuck with auto-dependent lives.

Those people are going to suffer mightily under $10/gallon gasoline. If they own property its value will plummet. It's going to rape our economy.

But let's not pretend it's a surprise. I'm 43 years old. In elementary school a major topic of our current events studies was the energy crisis at the time and the necessity for conservation. This video was featured between Saturday morning children's cartoons in 1978--thirty years ago.

In 1980 Ronald Reagan was elected U.S. president and all that nonsense stopped. Maybe it's no wonder people forgot something that they knew bloody damned well a generation ago. We're a long way from home and running out of gas.
