God, I fucking love this show.
Oh, and before reading; there's a few spoilers for 1x01 and slight slight impressions for future relationships, but that's about it.
I am so glad this is turning out as fucking brilliant as it is. I know a lot of people in the fandom don't really feel it's up to par with Doctor Who, but it's a completely different take on the genre. Well, not completely different, but I love the fact that it's so human and it's in one place. You've got real conflicts dealing with real people, you've got relationships and limited resources and a finite amount of power. When you're finished helping one person, when you're finished solving a case, you can't just hop into the TARDIS and leave. You have to sit and watch the consequences of every decision you make, whether it's for the good or for the bad, and whether it was done with noble intentions or otherwise.
Most of all, I'd really just like to comment on the relationship between Jack and Gwen. Obviously a lot of people feel that the show is really pushing the two of them together, that RTD really wants us to 'ship' them. I don't really feel that that's the case. For me, Jack has been far too long without the emotional aspects of solving crimes. Him and the Torchwood team are geared to finding artifacts and destroying alien threats, and as a result their personal lives have suffered, or they don't have relations with people at all.
Gwen increasingly represents this kind of loss of human capacity within all of them, and Jack can't help but be drawn to that. In my own mind, I relate his draw towards Gwen as a kind of desperate reach to find something that he used to have. In Doctor Who, Rose often had the role of 'domestic'; she was more focused with how the ramifications of the situations affected certain individuals personally. She wasn't there to overthrow governments and start revolutions and right the wrongs of many alien societies. She was there because she genuinely cared for those who were victims, are/were suffering, and that care generally caused her to need those great changes; to overthrow a suppressing government for the good of a single person she had met.
Obviously the Doctor would feel the same, but in general he empathizes with the entire populace rather than an individual (which is something I attribute to his role in Gallifrey's destruction).
Thus, to me, Gwen is giving Jack something he only had during his time with Rose and the Doctor, and the way he acts with her is the way he probably acted with our wonderful Team TARDIS; ie, the big grins and the flirting and the general flamboyancy of Jack (which he has lost a bit, I admit, though that's probably a result of his abandonment in PotW).
So, in conclusion of the Jack/Gwen: it's nothing Jack will very seriously pursue. He's used to getting a lot of things now, what with being the Torchwood head, and this might very well just be a way to get a bit of his old self back. It'll be a bit painful to watch since so much has changed in his life, but it's who he is and it's to be expected.
Another note I'd like to touch upon is Owen. Ah, I can hear some of you groaning. There seems to be a lot of Owen!hate, which I don't quite understand. Personally, I really enjoy Owen and what he brings to the show. He's actually one of the most important players because guess what he is? Comic relief. Yes, he probably shouldn't have used that pheromone spray to get those two into bed, but honestly, what could you expect? He's a male, and not just that: one with a 100% chance of having a great night. Not to be bashing on all the guys that are watching the show, but like I said before, Torchwood doesn't exactly allow the time for having social lives. They're consumed in their work, and I expect anyone would be a little frustrated in coming home alone every single night considering the life he leads. Sure, he can be a bit of a cock, but he still has a great dynamic with all of the other characters.
And before I forget: Murray Gold? Hi. Genius.
Cinematically speaking, I find this show to be SO, SO PRETTY. I love the aerial shots of Cardiff and I'm enjoying the transitions between the scenes. /shallow
There's not much else to say except that I adore the Doctor Who references. I love these little subtle imprints the Doctor has left on Earth; especially the invisible lift. Yes! Chameleon circuit! That was some serious brilliance on RTD's part, and I can't wait to see how everything will be tying together. The writers gave us an excellent exposition so here's hoping that what follows is going to be just as good. :)
Okay, so it wasn't summer photos, but it was still way important.
